About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

1st!!! I wish I would have known to have more than one gate when I built my fence last year. It was SUCH a pain to haul feed and hay from the gate (at the very end of the fence) to the barn.

Good idea using a cattle panel for the gate. You needed eye protection when cutting the nubs off. I've had some close calls when cutting smaller gage wire. Look forward to the garden update. Everything looks so nice and pretty with your fence and raised beds.

Suggestion , when you get a few staples hammered in swing the panel around then you will have a clear path to hammer the rest of the staples in.

I took your advice about the extra chicken wire and haven't regretted it. I can see having a few extra cattle panels around could be very useful too. A couple other handy tools to go along with those items is a good pair of J-clip pliers and Hog-ring pliers. Both are good tools to have for attaching things like chicken wire to other fencing, or building cages and such. Enjoy Vermont. Thanks for the videos.

Doug, if you ever need a small walk in gate using your cattle panel, cut off a section like you did however extend it past the post when you staple it tight. Then take the section you cut off and mentioned using in the garden and bend each of the ends around the upright you just cut them off of, it creates its own hinge and swings open and closed. I did this when using cattle panels for a dog kennel and the gates worked excellent. Thank you for the videos hope that made sense.

This is exactly what I was looking for! I'm creating a fenced-in composting area adjacent to my chicken coop so the hens can dig around in it. I'm going to line the ground with cedar fencing to contain all the compost material and surround it with cattle panels on top. I was just trying to figure out how to make an entryway into it, and this is it! thanks!

Awesome Idea! We built 4 cattle panel gates last year as temporary gates, but they really could be permanent. We didn't cut ours because we wanted to use them for something else later. So we just clipped them to the fence wire with some carabiners and we had quick temporary gates in a few seconds. Now I just have to build some wood gates to replace them.

I use them also; but instead of staples, which isn't a bad idea. I used some leftover pieces of Ramm electric rope (it lasts about 20-30 years) for "hinges". For a garden walkthru and lawnmower gates. We made a wooden PT frame and stapled the cut cattlepanel to the frame and later painted it; after it cured.... I have 2 4ft. wide gates I can take my 42" mower thru. The cost was about 12$ a gate instead of the 54$ for 'garden gates' of cyclone fence used in the suburbs or the 'walkthru' cattle panel gates at around 50$+.

Hey Doug. I always learn something when I watch! I won't need fences until next year this time- working on buying land and building small hone now- but grateful to see the video! I was wondering- hard to see how bottom of cattle panel attaches to the bottom boards, or does it not? Does it just sit on top of the board? Or sandwiched between 2 boards??Thx for clarifying this. Been subscribed approx 9 months always thumbs up, all your I am a one man show builds have been great but your idea of easy access gate needs a major rethink - example to get down on your hands & knees to remove two kick boards then same again to reattach every time you need access is going to be hard in your seventies / eighties.Really think you should rethink this idea again & build conventional gate with hinges & catch lock. Best regards.
