In the past 3 years, I grew so many gourds in my yard, and have had many a feathered friend take up residence in one of my gourds. I also have had some gourds become homes for unwanted critters like wasp nests and even a four foot black snake. Rule #1. Never put your finger into a gourds without shaking it first, lol. Beautiful pieces of art for sure.

One project for all ages and talent. I'm having trouble raising them. I'm trying better drainage and planting on a mound. I'm liking the "step bits " for drilling I drill 2 holes 3/8" diameter at bottom for dainage holes. ( it will be rainy sometimes) To remove seeds I blow into bottom holes with compressed air and seeds goes out the larger holes and aim them onto cement drive way for cleanup after done. Granddaughters did great. Thanks 👍

My children always loved making things with gourds. I planted some seeds this year for my grandbaby . I still have a rattle my son made for his baby brother out of a small gourd and painted it after it dried. Simple, but his brother loved it and even cut some teeth on that thing. It is hard as a rock.

I’ve always used a hot knife ( plug in exacto knife ) for gourds . They just go smoothly right thru those gourds . And no dust which can cause respiratory problems ( drilling - you need a mask !)

The rainbow yarn was a perfect choice.

Awesome! Beautiful work. I’ve learned to wear facial mask because the fibers inside gourd cans be bad for the lungs

This is a great video! you and your grandaughters done an amazing job. How do you dry the gourds and how long does it take for them to dry out? Do you have a link to the size for entrance and the height for any bird types?
@GardenerScott3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The gourds begin drying on the plant and then set in a cool, dry place to continue. It takes a few months to be completely dry. You can tell when you shake the gourd and can hear the seeds rattle inside. The size of the entrance and the height are both important factors in trying to attract specific bird types. I have links and discuss it more in my birdhouse video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZLcenaIZ9xlidk

They are little darlings. Great watch and cute bird houses. Did you get any birds in them? How long do they last?
@GardenerScott11 ай бұрын
Thank you! We didn't get birds, but it could be because the front yard is usually filled with kids playing. In my windy, dry region with harsh winter weather they last a few years.
@salishawheeler7611 ай бұрын
@@GardenerScott it's still a great project to do with the kids. Even though you didn't get any birds for them, it's still worth every moment with the grandkids. I don't have any kids myself, but I have many nieces and nephews that I craft with. Thank you. Have a blessed weekend.

Any recommendations for drying out the birdhouse? I have two growing right now and dont know when to take them off the vine.
@GardenerScott11 ай бұрын
Let them stay on the vine until they turn brown if you can. The stem will be brown too.

Hi, would the rocking of the birdhouse in the wind impact any nesting birds? I have made a couple but have yet to hang them anywhere yet
@GardenerScott4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it could. After hanging in the tree all year no birds moved in. One reason might be because of the wind.
@fiveminutegardener62954 жыл бұрын
Gardener Scott Thank you, might just focus on using them for ornamental purposes. Have you done a video on building a bird box or bat box? I’ll have a look now
@nowirehangers28153 жыл бұрын
maybe mount it instead of hanging?

Your cat cant wait for the bird house. Goards to go out and attreact birds!Does the cat go outside and sit under the birdhouse goards? Hopefully not! Nice video and i happen to have an envelope of birdhouse goards!
@GardenerScott5 жыл бұрын
That's my daughter's indoor cat and never goes outside. I agree that cats are a danger to birds. Gourds are easy to grow, but they have a very long season before ready to harvest.

Hey Scott, I love your videos and have been following your channel. I was unable to find an email or contact information for you. I have started a gardening website and was wondering if you'd be interested in writing some articles. It could help promote your channel and help my content grow at the same time. I could provide you with more information in an email. Thanks for your time!

That's how I started... with petting her, and then she kept coming back for more. I had to keep reshooting because she wouldn't let me finish. 🙂
