Hello from Oklahoma! Beautiful work! I wish I could find some wood that clean and nice to work with. What kind of wood is that? Thanks for the video!

I've seen old films on this in the old ways but this is the first one I've seen in modern times that has someone that skilled on the use of a hatchet. You're an expert

Thank you very much Michael. Also if you have links to the old videos i would love to see them

Early on the Norse were certainly in parts of what later became Scotland. Many of my Highland and Isle of Skye clans have Norse origins. Maybe the Norse borrowed the cup technology from the Saami and brought it with them into Scotland. Anway, it is very useful technology whoever has the skill to make one. And beautiful too!!

This is more of a nordic Kuksa. The Scottish Quaich has two handles, while kuksas (which originate from Lapland) only have one handle.
@matiaskoivu58715 жыл бұрын
That is correct. And in Finnland we make kuksa from birch burl.
@markdudley38315 жыл бұрын
The Quaich has two handles so it can be used by either a left or right handed Scotsman !

@Arska Scandinavian is the term for the regions of the Scandinavian Peninsula and Demark ...inhabited by Norwegians, Swedes, And Danes.. the term Nordic includes Scandinavia and Finland, Iceland ,the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and includes the Sápmi regions. The Kuksa in particular is from Finnish Lapland and made from the burl of a birch tree. In Norway it's a Guksi, and in Sweden it's a Kåsa.

Guksi is a traditional Sapmi Duodji artwork. Kuksa is its Finnish name, probably most often heard in travel marketing of Finnish Lapland (Sapmiland that belongs to Finland). Making Sapmiland an exotic travel destination for Finnish economy is coultural appropriation. Sapmi rights groups say that ethical tourists can buy and use duodji guksis and knives, though many other items are off-limits for non-Sapmi. How you would call this Scottish, and why with a Finnish name, puzzles me. Guksi are widely used by non-Sapmi, too, in Finland and Scandinavia, but I hear, not elsewhere. Could some Finns have brought this item to Scotland 2000 years ago? I doubt it. Finns didn't know how to navigate like the Danes/Norse. The so-called vikings could have brought it from their travels, but what would they have called it? The name of the item in modern Swedish is kåsa. See Guksi in Wikipedia, which is my source.
