Komplete kontrol Mk1/Mk2 best tutorial for Live sets: most of my set list are multiple layers of sound w/full effects @one midi channel & another layer and split @next midi channel at certain song on a different template.. my question is, can we toggle the templates with a foot switch pedal ? As for now I’m using the cursor button up/down for this purpose.. I agreed, by far this is the best controller out there for Live or Studio environment. I’m selling all my hardware synth, picked up KK + komplete 12 package deal and other Softsynth and possibilities are endless... Matt, thank you so much for your inside knowledge of these instruments, very helpful...

This is a real game changer do you have a video showing this with the mk2
@iTickle886 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt- Looks like you haven't been here for a while, and I know this vid is now on the 'old' side, but I just wanted to say thank you! I bought an S88 mk2 a week ago, and I learned a lot from you. I spent a good deal of time studying your vid and it definitely pointed me in the right direction. I'm happy to report (and I'm pretty sure most everybody already knows this, but for what it's worth...) to all mk2 owners that the functionality and set up works as described in this video, albeit one caveat; the "Control Editor" software is non-functional, and the procedure described at the end of this video can be done in the "Komplete Kontrol" software- keyboard splits, channel assignments, relabeling of knobs and buttons, all of it. So I don't know if you'll see this Matt, but none the less thank you!! :)

I do feel like they got something very backwards with this workflow. The SOFTWARE should be setting up the regions and lights, not the hardware. Currently, if I'm in the middle of a show and switching songs, I need to change my setup on my DAW/Host AND select the corresponding midi region setting "pages" on the board. This seems incredibly redundant, time confusing, and cumbersome if you're playing gigs with dozens of complex setups (as I regularly do). That's why I just use mainstage. I may not have the lights (which would be very handy, I thought of trying to build an Arduino-powered thing like this years ago), but I don't have to do any menu surfing on my board, just switch patches on Mainstage and everything is setup with splits and new VIs. I even wrote a MIDI router in Max/MSP to create multiple setups within a single MainStage patch, by simply changing the incoming midi channel. Not to be arrogant, but my setup is light years ahead of this workflow in its convenience and simplicity for live performance. But those lights are a great idea... I just wish I could merge it with my workflow.
@CrossSpirited218 жыл бұрын
+Eric Barker If what you say about playing gigs and having complex setups is true then you're really only going against what you're preaching. I, myself, play live at my church and I also have complex setups to my station with various equipment and instruments. For big, and long services, that I have prior knowledge of, I would pre-make (or "preset") my equipment in the way I would use it for the service and "practice" what it is that I'm going to be doing for that service. You can't just "wing it" at a gig. You can add little improvisations here and there, but you can't tell me that you go to a gig, with a complex setup, and wing the entire thing, especially if you're expecting some sort of fee or compensation for your work. A professional who has done many live performances would know that they need to have a sturdy foundation work to their performance. Then they can add their little improvisations wherever and whenever they want. With that said, you should already have an idea of what it is you want to do, how you want to lay it out and then customize your DAW/Host program to do what you want. The keyboard is not setting up any regions or lights. They are set up in the "SOFTWARE" as you so pointed out in your comment. The person who has made the video literally shows that you setup the regions and lights WITHIN the software controller editor. That's something you take time out before a performance and setup the way you want it to be so that it's easier for your gig, workflow and leaves less time using a mouse (or your finger on the trackpad) to go and point and click to an effect/action on your DAW/Host. Using a mouse (or your finger) wastes time on what effects/actions you want to initiate at a specific moment; it also cuts into your performance. The controller editor helps to map and layout your effects, plugins, sounds, instruments in such a way that you can quite literally control what you want straight from the small area of interest that's on the keyboard (instead of having to reach all the way over to your laptop to activate/trigger/etc whatever it is that you need to do. Now, if you need to make a quick change in sounds/instruments for a nice little twist then just utilize the ARP Hold feature to hold a sound or sequence to keep the audience at bay until you can make your "quick" changes. It's very simple and just needs a bit of playing around to understand and get a handle of.
@EricBBarker8 жыл бұрын
+CrossSpirited21 not sure where you got that I was winging it. I spend dozens of hours setting up and practicing my with my setup. I just try to make it as seamless as possible so that I can spend the most time playing keys and not buttons. You sure you're replying to the right poster?

Trying to decide between this and Ableton push, already have Maschine studio
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Jack Spade Push is awesome if you will be using Ableton heavily. I have a Push, but I find the Komplete Kontrol more useful for me because I do 90% of my production in Maschine standalone. So for me, the added functionality of the KKS really makes Maschine even better. Push is great because it is connected to a DAW - so until Maschine offers some more DAW-like features, there are things that Push will do better.
@jacksp8de9 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong I love Maschine stand alone and you've probably heard people talk about the limitations with arranging. If NI did an overhaul of the song mode I may use Maschine exclusively. But Ableton's workflow is so dope with just a midi controller and mouse I can't imagine how happy the Push would make me. However the Komplete Kontrol is so damn good looking lol, best designed keyboard I ever seen and I hear the keybed is like butter. I'd be happy with either, and I'll probably eventually have both anyway, but for now leaning towards the push.
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Jack Spade well the other thing to consider is that the Push is only really tightly integrated with Live's internal instrument library. So you have to do a lot of work with your user library to access and control outside VSTs. That is where Komplete and KKS is really winning. I even bought a product from Audio Modder to convert Komplete and Maschine libraries so they could be integrated with Push and it was really clunky in my opinion.
@jacksp8de9 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I was going to do the audio modded thing too. I thought that would solve that issue. You're making me nervous lol. Idk still on the fence but I'll make my decision by Friday. Thanks Matt!
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials9 жыл бұрын
Ha- sorry about that, and I'm definitely not trying to recommend NI stuff over others. Its just that I was hoping audio modder could make Push my "super Maschine" so I wouldn't have to be so reliant on Maschine. It actually did the opposite and made me appreciate Maschine even more despite its Arranger flaws lol.

Great, but what if you want to use a sustain pedal? I set similar stuff with my s88mk2 but sustain works on only one midi channel! So if you have track 1 on 1 midi channel, second on 2 midi ch, etc. the sustain pedal will work on the first channel only! It makes this controller unusable to me. Or usable until you will not use the pedal. Anybody knows any solution?

Is there somewhere i can listen to a full performance on this set?
@Niruth9 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how you access the next set of instruments simply by using the preset down/up buttons to change templates (you're doing at 3:12). I've got 4 instruments that are all record-enabled, and I have 2 templates (each template having 2 key zones)in the controller editor. Each instrument has its own midi channel (1, 2, 3, 4), and the key zones are using these channels (template 1: first key zone set to channel 1, second key zone set to channel 2 etc.). For example, if I were to press C2 on the first template, instrument 1 and 3 plays that key instead of just instrument 1. How do I set it so only Instrument 1 plays in this case, and then when I switch to the other template Instrument 3 plays it instead? Not sure if I'm stupid or just missing something, and this was the best possible way I could explain the problem. By the way my DAW is Logic Pro X, and yes the keyboard is setup properly to it.
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Niruth You have got to make sure that you set up the zones in the Controller Editor to be on the correct corresponding MIDI channels. If you setup the Ableton tracks on different MIDI channels, thats only half the battle. Go into the CE and click on the colored zone and go to the Assign tab to select the corresponding MIDI channel.
@Niruth9 жыл бұрын
+Matt Cellitti Alright thanks a bunch! After doing that, and then enabling an option called "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording" in Logic X recording project settings, I managed to get it working. Great tutorial! You've got yourself a new subscriber :)

But 3 years on the Kontrol Editor has been replaced by an app much more integrated with Komplete Kontrol - would you consider doing a new video to explain how to do the same thing with that software because I was having trouble translating across to the new software. Hi Matt! I was thinking about buying the new s61 mk2, but with some hesitation. Now that I've seen that... I definitively buy mine! I don't know exactly how you did that because I'm a total nb in that controller world, but the important thing is that it is possible to do! I've read that in komplete kontrol you can't layer instrument or apply effect, that u have to play one instrument at a time. But here I understood well, using the controller as midi instrument in ableton you can override that problem. Is it correct? You showed here how to prep for life action, but If I want to record such improvisation, can I with softwares you showed here? Sorry if my question are a little bit obvious, I'm totally new at this! I play piano, acoustic one... I never tried such equipment. But I got a great feeling about the experience! Thanks a lot for those videos!

I don'tbecause you currently do not have this level of functionality for the MK2. MK1 specifically was controlled by the Control Editor app which allowed for the splitting of the keybed into different MIDI zones. MK2 MIDI control is located in the KK app itself and is missing these features...
