Another thing to do for more realism/authenticity, place herbs and small flowers between some of the pages. Weeds are fine since they are actually herbs that nobody uses anymore.

its some good inspiration, for example how to ad hog those chord supports. im pretty tempted now to screw in some hooks to the underside of this ladder in my room, and work underneath it. those chord bumps on the spine just look so good for a thick book, and if its thick, you naturally want a handsown headband

I've seen a few book making videos, this is the first one that explained what the head and tail bands were for. Thanks!
@wesjordan19085 жыл бұрын
Great project. I've done a book similar to this for a friend. One note if you want the cords to be a little more defined and you're using veg tanned leather you can place the book in your clamps/jig and dampen ghe leather going over your spine. And use some extra coding to keep pressure on the spine while it dries. Also the embossing looks great on here. If never thought of using poly fill to help press in the embossing.

I just watched this again and remembered how much I want to finish making my Halloween spell book. I started mine with full size 8.5x11 inch paper and have to figure out how to finish it. Very helpful by the way.

Using coffee works well too for dying your pages, also adds a grimy element if desired if you dry them with some of the grounds on the sheets. Also baking the sheets in the oven on a flat pan until they rise off the pan makes them look older.

That's not gibberish, that's freaking Rovás - Old Hungarian alphabet. And the text is legible Latin! I deciphered "N(y)unc facilisis in erat a ultrices" at some point. Incredible work tho! ------ Edit: Okay, after some further analysis I can confirm it's Latin, and the writings are both in Rovás and mirrored Old Latin (Old Italic) scripts. One "spell" I managed to read: ULTRIPES TURPIS *orbi sodales imperdiet dui pellentesque Auctor aliquam pretium leo vitae erat viverra mollis. Nulla facilisi, [szed] sed luctus purus. Anyone speaking Latin here?
@chezlin7 жыл бұрын
Oh snap! I had no idea! That's really cool, I wish I knew it was a real alphabet when I made this stuff- it would have been fun to try to make the words make sense. Or as much sense as I could do, not knowing how to speak Hungarian... 😅 Thanks for letting me know!!

I knew that it was an actual language, but i thought it was an adaptation of Elder Futhark. Any how, good investigative work on your part. : )
@Crosshill6 жыл бұрын
latin students should group up and have fun using that dead language. legit latin is cool as shit, even if its only in sentimental value. having a song or a spellbook and knowing it makes actual sense is just neat

You did a nice job on the book. Suggestion, on the ends of the book spine, the white thread. How about tea or a light brown wood stain something you can put on the white thread and wipe off leaving a dingy brown, yellowed look making the stark white thread that you can see look yellowed, dingy and old. Sanding spots and using some of the same stain you can distress and age the leather as well. Nice Job!
@Angelologies3336 жыл бұрын
I thought the tea in the list was just for laughs, but I was surprised when you actually used it for the spell book
@Cassiterit37 жыл бұрын
Love the tutorial, and I will be coming back to it often. Gotta say, though, that when you are teaching a specific stitch like the head and tail stitch, that putting jump cuts in your editing makes it extremely hard to follow what you are doing.

I've been making notebooks for a while now, but this is a REALLY cool tutorial for the extra stuff. Really goes above and beyond. I'll be incorporating some of these techniques myself, especially sewing the head/tail-bands. I'd also like to know how to prepare book pages for printing- the formatting and such. Maybe I'll research that next, unless someone already has a tutorial they could point me towards.

Thank you for the pages. That’s actually runic. The language on the paper. It’s the old Nordic/ Anglo Saxon tunic script. The Vikings used that language. I’m going to see if I can translate it because I know that alphabet really well if I wind up translating it I’ll post what I’ve done in a message. Thanks for the video I love binding books. I made a book of shadows a little while ago and am thinking of making another one. I haven’t done it with the cording so that will be really fun to try. I also do belegarth and the sca which is midevil re-enactment with sword fighting so this will be a fun flurby prop.
