I think you'll probably find that those tension fits will wiggle loose over time with use, and pegs (or better yet, wedges) will most definitely be necessary at a certain point. Good job though, I'm working on a bed with my son as well! It's a great bonding project.

I can see pegs being useful on the top posts, but the base is held in by tension.,

I trully do admire this boy's precision and attention to detail. However now after watching this I have no problem watching most 80s horror films. Thanks pal

2:33 For your end grain cuts I would use a circular/skil saw to get you most of the way then finish with a scroll saw. Chisel, file, and sand any what you don't like. Hope that helps, Cheers :)

Yes, a beautiful Viking bed, but it is mostly made for a permanent camp, like a medieval village! it would be too inconvenient to dismantle and reassemble it to put it in a Viking tent for wandering re-enactments, precisely because of the weaves!
@Medieval_Mayhem3 ай бұрын
Thanks. It'd be a high status item. There's plenty of evidence for large long-term Norse encampments during the great heathen army etc and seige of paris. And for the senior and high status people would have quite a lot of furniture and chests etc in their tents - maybe tapestries etc as well. Similar to what the Romans did.

I may have missed it, but what thickness are y’all using for the sideboards?
@Medieval_Mayhem11 ай бұрын
From memory 30mm or similar.

Dude, when you use a router you gotta work from left to right against the rotation of the cutter.The only exception is when you're shaping a steeply angled cut against end grain like on a round table top or a mitre cut. Your son was routing the wrong way with his hand in front of the machine and you could see the machine grabbing and jerking forward, if he hit a knot or some tricky grain it could easily have pulled the tool violently out of his hand into his other arm. Otherwise it was a great video and an awesome build.

CHeers, I appreciate the comments. This is an older video and through experience I have learnt the value of what you are refering to in regards to safety. Yes, I was a bit loose with safety and that's not cool. New videos out soon. Thanks.

How much rope did you use for the size, what size was the frame and hole spacings?
@Medieval_Mayhem3 жыл бұрын
Holes are 10mm, frame was for a modern single mattress and rope size is approx 8mm (off the top of my head), used approx 14 metres.

@Medieval_Mayhem2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You could just make one out of linen, leaving it open so you could stuff it with bracken or grass. But for most purposes you could just use a futon mattress or foam.

There is a period rope bed design that I prefer to the design you are using, partly because it has a built-in tightening mechanism. It's based on an early period ivory carving in the V&A. My article on it is in the _Miscellany_ and webbed here: www.daviddfriedman.com/Medieval/StarvingStudent/Starving%20Student%20Page.html

@@NataliedeClare Should he use a medieval camera to record the project too? Maybe a medieval computer to share the video? If you want a completely accurate project done, then go ahead and do it yourself. Afterwards, you can get in your horse drawn wagon and travel back here and let me know how it turned out.
