Okay people, ANY container can be used for Kratky hydroponics. The key to hydroponics is the hydroponic fertilizer. Specific Hydroponic fertilizer that I recommend is masterblend. Google it. Instead of net pots you can use aluminum cans( soda/beer) with the tops cut off. Just bend the top over. For your container. Tape with Aluminum foil prevents light from penetrating the container.

Yes you should just cut from the tops to eat the amount you want. Lettuce will continue to regrow from the heart. Just leave 2-3 inches of heart alone as you cut the top of leaves to eat.

It can be a bit difficult to see the water level against the black background. I suggest making a second slot at the opposite side of the container to let some light through. You can put a cardboard flap over the slots when not monitoring the water level to keep the light out.

Boss Let me offer this from my old Hydroponic grow If you drill the hole the right size you can cut your plugs into the hole and it will hold the plant in place all though its life cycle. I had mine in a greenhouse and bout a head of butternut lettuce at store ate it down to a few leaves then put it in a Kratky \style system like you made here. By only taking enough at a time I was able to harvest salads for 3 years from that one first lettuce. I did it on the super cheap and lazy. As I didnt have money for pot medium or even net pots I had to come up with the method above. I later used this same method on a much Larger scale and at my high point I had 1500 Plants Growing in a 10'x40'x19' G.H. with no pumps to fail. Word got back to our local college about it and I had the teacher bringing their students to tour my set up. We even grow radishes with my softer holding medium and no cups allowed them to expand in the space so they weren't restricted. Just some money saving ideas that have worked for me.

Great video Khang - Nice to see the Salad Bowl growing. The Salad Bowl lettuce grows very rapidly, and I'd recommend havesting leaves as you need them rather than all at once - With my family, we've found that just two lettuce plants are enough to keep us going for months at a time as they grow new leaves as fast as we can use them. The salad bowl variety doesn't seem particularly interested in bolting or flowering, and is a great continuous cropper. Cheers!!

I have netcups, but have found pool noodles and chose to use those because it can get several uses out of it. I don't remember where i saw the pool noodle idea but he cut it to make 48 section cuttings. I haven't been able to get 48 out of mine. comes out to a few cents .03 each section cutting. a plus again it is reusable which will make that $0.03 really stretch out.

This looks lovely! :) How come there's enough oxygen in water for the whole process ? A lot of hydroponic setups (just like this one) include air pump to oxygenate water and I'm wondering how come this one doesn't need air pump ?

In the beginning, if you don't feel SUPER comfortable with the science behind the kratky method and you feel like your plants / seedlings / cuttings would benefit from some extra oxygen, then keep reading... Something I have done since my gram first showed me years ago, (well over a decade and a half now) is to take a spray bottle and use the "STREAM" (like how you twist the nozzle of the spray bottle to get it to spray differently) and youcan just STREAM spray directly into the water every day or every other day. * TIP * IF you DO decide to do this, and you do end up missing a day or two, this WIL / MAY AND HAS stunted the growth a little as youve gotten thr plant used to the extra o2. My gram had me "STREAM"-ing the tree cuttings she was doing in water until the first few roots headed / crowned (as she'd call it) Once I started doing this, I noticed a DRAMATIC difference in brassicas and more so if done every 24-48 hrs. This makes a HUGE difference with cuttings as well and I've done it with 110% success rates of every type of cutting I've taken. Hope this helps.

@@leannekenyoung if you're using the Kratky method and you're meaning to 'fill it up' back to where the water WAS, (I should have specified, my apologies) one would NEVER want to 'STREAM' enough to replace ALL of the water that's been consumed. You'd simply be 'STREAMING' anywhere between 15-20 times, given it's a 16 oz Mason jar. Anything smaller and 10 sprays will be perfect, so you're not replacing water consumed. The issue with what's being portrayed here, is that as the plant growing, using the Kratky method, the roots will grow to reach the depleting water. As the roots get farther from the water, the plants actually grow their own, "AIR ROOTS", which collect air on their own. Adding extra air, because the science for some, isn't logical, I tested THEN, with my gram and it DEF will not hurt any type of plant. It does help some though. I have noticed when I spray the cutting water, the # of sprays never gets high or more regardless of how far gone the water has depleted. Doing so, will in turn, "drown" the plants provided air roots and WILL affect and stunt the plants growth. If you're using Kratky, I would follow the *Spray Chart* I have left below. *AGAIN, this is ONLY for the beginning, when you're trying the "Kratky Method" for the 1st time, until you see the super fine air roots beginning to develop. I know some plant owners like to 'SEE' what's going on, if possible and it is VERY tempting to replace that water completely, to where you originally filled your container to. Not necessary. The "Kratky method" has been used for quite some time and the only thing I've ever seen suggested is, if you DON'T cover the outside of your water resivoir, and algae begins to grow, simply marking where your water is, BEFORE you take it out, to clean and then return your plant to- IS IT! Plants are quite majestic & magical things. They grow in the worst and even trying conditions, despite what bloggers tend to lead on. (This is simply done bc below where they tell you to 'throw it out', 'try a pesticide/fungicide', I have found, through vigorous research, 10 times out of 10, you'll find a product they suggest along with their affiliate Amazon link below for you to purchase said pesticide / fungicide. Which is the point of having their blog. To promote products & earn a %. Which I get, but those who like to make money and don't care about ACTUALLY solving the problem, regardless if they KNOW their solution to a reader's problem WON'T work, they'll keep it up anyways. (This is why I ALWAYS head to several gardener's blog's, to check for other solutions and other 'diagnoses' or 'remedys'.) *Gardener's Blog's* THIS, is where I've found all the GOLDEN NUGGETS which MANY KZbin-rs don't tell you many of the good tips & tricks on their KZbin videos. It would make their vids MUCH longer if they did. OR.. Some will perform the 'tips' then refer to them in their blog. Hope this helps. Happy planting & growing!💕

Another great video. Dollar Tree sell container like the painted one for $1 plus tax, so each would be very inexpensive to make, without having to worry about algae. LarryM Actually the kratky method was developed mainly for leafy greens. This type of hydro setup isn't great for anything else. If you want to grow real fruit, then look at a real system with airstones/pumps etc that will handle plants with higher nutrient and water demands.

I'm sure they have and the more demanding the plant the less successful they will be with it. There's a reason a hydro setup is the way it is. This system works better for leafy greens. I'm sure you can get fruit crops from it but when you compare it to the yield of a proper hydro system, then you'll see the difference. You'll also have a lot less chance of issues with the plants..

@@ollythomas6702 yeah, I agree... this is really a method best used for plants that aren't going to be alive for a long time. I guess you could grow cucumber or tomato plant in it if you don't mind using something like a 10+ gal res or don't want to keep your plant past it's first fruits, but i would just stick to "salad greens" with kratky, or keep starting clones of your plants so they can be replaced. Kratky is so great because it's convenient, not because it's awesome. The longer you go and the more you refill the res the easier it is to get root issues. But hey, try it out... Everyone's environment is different so you could get acceptable results.

I just came from the local dollar store. there are all kinds of neat containers to drill holes into. with all the plastic choices they have there you can make a desktop micro kratky up to the size khang just showed you. have fun. for the containers, would Maxwell House cans work? The are Blue and not a lot of light if I look at it in from of the light. I also thought the old grounds might help with the nutrients. I've never done hydroponics

I've been getting ready to start some Kratky gardening in my basement and when I was at the store buying my nutrients, the gentleman mentioned that I would need to change to plain water two weeks before I harvest my lettuce so that the chemicals would be out of the lettuce leaves and it'd be safe to eat. It wasn't until much later that I recalled him saying that and seeing you harvesting multiple times while you were growing your lettuce (either this video or another). This got me thinking about what he said and I was wondering how harvesting multiple times can be done when the plant is continuously being fed with chemicals? Thanks for your answer... I've got my garden started and I'm concerned about ingesting something I shouldn't. All the best! Love your vids!

I’ve wrapped my containers with tin foil and so far I haven’t seen any algae growth. I just find for me that’s a much easier option then spray paint. Also for my container I have a lot of leftover distilled water containers they are 4 litres and I just remove the cap and no drilling required I also don’t put a net cup in I just put the plant in with it tilted on the side so the top part is out and the roots are in the water it’s never been a problem before.

What I find so funny is that I've tried to grow three different kinds of lettuce in soil and hydroponics and most of them have done horrible. I have 1 that I transplanted into my garden that is doing "ok" but it's like many weeks old. I've even had lettuce in the same hydro system as basil that had been exploding. I am starting to suspect the seeds. They were the more expensive organic brand from our big box store. Go figure! I'll be doing some more Kratky grows indoors here soon now that all of the plants are in the garden lol. Planted Tatsoi and MoA Scotch Bonnet last night.

another good container are the all plastic 1KG coffee containers, thats what I use. you could get 1 to 2 grow sites in them, depends what you grow. specifically the folders ones, but any all plastic one is fine.
