I agree with the comments. Best tutorial out there. Thank you! I wish I could show you a pic of my finishes rug. I used regular rope, made a template similar to yours, and ended up doing six pass throughs. I absolutely love it on our 1985 Beneteau First.

Got the idea to make a mat after reading the Marlinspike sailor by Hervey Garret Smith, but found the instructions not to be clear enough. I came to KZbin for help and found this-fantastic tutorial! It was very easy to follow. Made a lovely mat with our old main halyard :>

Thanks for the feedback! I also started with the Marlinspike Sailor. It’s a great book, but doesn’t always have enough detail.

@@JustALittleFurther Yea, if anything, it sparks the desire to start rope projects :), which is okay! This is our finished mat: merveilles.town/@rek/105357923642234008 thx again~ our rope was much longer, so we had to do 6-passes XD.

This is the most helpful tutorial on these rugs I've seen so far. Thank you for the upload. I've been wanting to make one for my Great Lakes porch decor but it just seemed overwhelming until now. The wood template and nails are a great idea.

How much line (length) should I use with a 1-inch line to make a mat about 3 1/2 foot wide?
@JustALittleFurther4 жыл бұрын
Whew - 1" line is bigger than I've ever used. I'd guess about 50-55 feet. If you decide to make it, would you send us some feedback? Thanks

Question: If someone had a longer thinner rope like a actual climbing rope that was left over for a climbing mat. I could just technically use one end until I run out and then whatever space is empty in between I could use the other line to finish correct I don't have to alternate lines back and forth?
@JustALittleFurther4 жыл бұрын
I've actually done just this with an old climbing rope. It takes more time and work, because you will have to complete 4-5 loops, but it comes out nice. Be sure to stitch all the loops together as the last step. Good luck!

@JustALittleFurther2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristen, I’ve never made one that large. The nail pattern would be the same but on a much larger scale. Maybe 2-3 times as much rope? Good luck… let me know how you do.

How do you adjust size of mat ? Especially larger /wider
@JustALittleFurther2 жыл бұрын
There are two options for making it larger: Use larger line or complete more loops than the three shown in the video.

hi just want to ask...would this hold its shape even when machine washed?i want to make one but i would like to use fabric instead of rope..pls i hope youd answer my question.thank you very much
@JustALittleFurther4 жыл бұрын
I’ve never made one from fabric, so I’m not sure. My guess is that it would be okay, but you will need to straighten it up afterwards. I’d wash in cold water and not use a dryer. If you make it, please let everyone know how it turned out.
@meh-yeow61794 жыл бұрын
Yes..Thank you very much for noticing and answering my question. I plan to use a braided fabric so it would have some stiffness. I will surely update how it will turn out. Thanks again. I love your video. Your instructions are easy to understand. But I still watched it more than a few times already.
@frejanielsen78443 жыл бұрын
How did you tighten it!?!?
@JustALittleFurther3 жыл бұрын
It’s an iterative process. Start at one end and begin taking out the slack, working towards the other end. You may have to repeat the process 2-3 times, but eventually all the slack will be worked out. Have to be patient. Good luck!

Thanks , question is size , because I'm making a Matt for a model boat out of twine. Do I copy the pattern 3 inches??
@JustALittleFurther4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I’ve made the mat from twine as well, and the pattern just needs to be scaled down. The ends of the line will have to be glued instead of stitched. Good luck on the project.

will this work with a 90 meter 8.5 mm climbing rope? Obviously I would have to expand the pattern, but will it be easy to tighten up if I make the pattern to large? Hope my question makes sense. thx

Yes it will work with 8.5mm rope, but you will have to make 4 or 5 passes instead of 3. It just takes more patience to get it tightened up evenly.
