I´m making a new handle for one of my Italian axes. And I try it out afterwards.

Ah good to see some axe work. Nice hatchet work. I would have gone to the spookshave from the start. Shure, a shave horse and log splittting souds good. Looking forward to see you doing those videos. Nice job as usual. Maby yoúllö have to make multiple handels of different lengths for any occation ;)

It’s a lot quicker to remove wood with a hatchet, as long as you have some way to know where you are and don’t take away too much. Hence the guidelines. I think it would also work splitting raw material for handles out with axes as wedges and striking them with a wooden mallet. I’ve seen that before. So maybe I’ll try that before I get a froe.

I'm not an expert, but I think you could have made a shallower face cut at the end. Still, it took very little timr to fell that tree. It looks like your handle is a success.

When I fell bigger trees with a chainsaw I make a shallower face cut. But I’m not that scared of cutting too deep on these smaller trees. And to my experience it works well like this. But I’ll try felling with a shallower face cut and compare the two methods. Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you’ll be back for next one!

Well, there are plenty of chainsaw videos as well as axe videos on KZbin. One doesn’t exclude the other, and I also use both. But when I make an axe video, of course I’ll avoid using a chainsaw. In an axe video I try to convey the joy of working without noise and getting some healthy excercise at the same time, enjoying the forest environment. As to practicality, it’s hard to compete with a chainsaw when it comes to working with larger trees. But the axe can actually hold its own pretty well when dealing with smaller growth. I don’t see myself as a master of these things, but if you’re interrested in learning more about the axe’s practical use, I recommend watching Ben Scott. I’ve learned a lot from his channel. And finally, an obvious reason to learn how to use the axe is the independence: you don’t have to rely on any company to buy spare parts, sawchains, gas or oil if you use an axe. With a couple of files and grinding stones you’re pretty much set for life with an axe. And some basic woodworking tools to make new handles every once in a while. With all this said, I hope you’ll enjoy both chainsaws and axes, be it in real life or on KZbin.

Another nice video, thanks :) If i may ask, How do you find the narrow handle of the calabria vs the oval one of the america? And how do you think the two head types compare ? i have an america 700, and i am thinking about the calabria, but that handle type i must admit is making me have some questions. :)

I’m not that bothered by the shape of the handle on the Calabria. But of course I prefer a more oval shape. Thibaud Morteliere(his channel is called Theud Bald) offers a modified version of the Calabria on his webshop, made by another forge. It has a better eyeshape. His webshop: la-frontiere.fr/?srsltid=AfmBOor3mrZs31x_I9f_FcOnyakCsCiWh1Oh5FDE_Ykp7eDibG_WIfMb And if you want to see more of my axe related content, you may be interrested in my other channel: youtube.com/@myoutdoorways?si=rOs8kfMUgEfY4PWF
