The trick is in making sure the square "fipple" is cut precisely. You may need to try a couple of times before you get the sound you want

Yes. Plasticine/ play dough or wet paper with a bit of glue (or flour) to make a plug or anything that you find that has the right shape! A bit of wood dowel will make it sound clearer... the harder the material of the plus, the better the sound (usually!!)
