3 foot cord ends up wayyyyyy too short by the end. I recommend using two 6 foot cords.

Not true, as long as the 6ft cord is the base loop cord (longest part of The cross) it works out fine. Maybe you could make the short cord 3.5 ft for a little extra room. 2 6ft would leave you with a lot of wasted cord.
