Now I realize what you were asking. That is an edge finder. I was using the jaw of the vise as the back edge of the part for the Y axis and then I used the left side to find the edge for the X axis. Once you find your edge you can find dead center of your part and use your digital readout to measure out from center to your features like drill holes etc.
