Hello sweet things! To celebrate the launch of my second authored and illustrated picturebook BANDITS (out on 29th Sept and now available for pre-order) I am going to share my long awaited video on EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT MAKING A PICTUREBOOK! In this video I discuss coming up with ideas, pitching your ideas, getting published (and what it's like to work with a publisher), book contracts, getting paid and the entire picturebook process (manuscripts, storyboards, roughs, final art, digital detailing, getting art scanned, editing, colour proofs and getting your advance copies). People think of starving artists when they have that idea. The sort of artists that only make work for themselves with no commercial application in mind - few creatives are actually like that. Even fine artists try to appeal to curators and collectors. Tell them to look around them - everything they see was touched by a creative! Graphic designers, illustrators, architects, landscapers, letterers, industrial designers, interior designers. People underestimate how much of their lives are touched by the commercial, visual and performing arts.

I love this video! The only thing I would add is that people should never pay for a literary agent! A good literary agent will believe in you enough and in their skill enough that they’ll represent you for free and then they’ll get a cut of the book profits just like you 🥰

Yes! I didn't communicate what I meant well, I meant costs money in the way that they take a percentage! I suppose the idea is that they would get you a better deal than you can get yourself and so they are worth the percentage they take! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I hope people that were worried about needing to pay for a literary agent upfront see this!!!

@@jhowardsupporter it was a report, just a couple of lines of who inspires us and why so he could get to know us better. And I do think that writing can make you a better artist. If you’re able to describe the world around you through words, you you can then interpret those words through your art. It at least definitely doesn’t make you a worse artist.

I have no experience in making a book but a company did contact me to do a sample book spread illustration for a book idea they're doing. I also work traditionally and painting an entire spread in one sheet would be a recipe for disaster especially because there was a lot of elements in the brief they gave. So I relate so much to painting elements in different sheets of paper. It helped the process go smoothly and definitely relieved the anxiety you get when everything has to go right or else... Basically, painting elements of the book in different sheets is a smart way of doing things when you're working traditionally. :) Thank you for your insight on your book. The art looks amazing!

Hello hello from Germany! I loved this video so much, thank you for all the insights. I work as a full time children's book illustrator in Germany and in my opinion the hardest part is to get into the industry/building relationships to the people in the industry. To achieve that you have to go to as many bookfairs as you can and be brave and talk to people and get to know each other. In Germany it is not very common for illustrators to have an agent, because the payment isn't the best. I could not afford to keep my agent because of the low payment for children's books. I love making books and it is the only thing I want to do really so I had to go on without my agent but it is going well because I now know many people from the industry. But I think in other countries it is super hard to go without an agent at the beginning, so your advice to get an agent is great!! :) And: I feel like I am burnt out all the time haha... Making books is exhausting, but I love it sooooo much!! Your books look so great!! Thanks for making them!!!

I'm so grateful for this video!! You're one of my biggest inspirations and this video was such a motivation for me ^_^ I just completed my first project of my final year as an illustration student, we were given a week to respond to a brief about our relationship with nature and I ended up underestimating how tiring the process of making a picturebook would be, so I had 5 days to push one out...I barely slept and had numerous breakdowns but the process was extremely eye opening and I'm so happy to be able to say that I did it!! It wasn't to the best of my ability due to the time limit but I wanna say this to anyone reading who would like to work in this field, JUST DO IT! It feels overwhelming at first, especially if you're like me and have to figure everything out by yourself, but whatever the end result is you still learn from it and whatever you take away will just help you with your next attempt :)) good luck!! 💞

Thanks for this! I lost my ability to write stories from disuse, and storybook illustration was something I wished I could do back in the day. I'd love to do it, but I'm not a story writer. I was fortunately commissioned to illustrate it for someone who isn't an author by trade and then we self published. Brilliant, thank you so much for making this video! I have written and illustrated a book for my final major project in uni, and now I've just been sitting with this product for months, not having the courage to approach a publisher with it. I know that it's a good concept and believe it will be a good product, but it is also daunting to submit something *almost* finished that I know will require a lot of changes. Another complicated bit of this book project of mine, is that I lived and studied in the UK, but now I am back in my home country Norway. So I am kind of struggling to decide if I should start by approaching a British or Norwegian publisher.

@@furrylittlepeach So I live in Pakistan and the publishing industry is different than the one in Australia, so obviously there is a bit of a gap in all the legal work. I just wanted to ask what your deadlines look like. how many months do you get to create the storyboards and final artwork? Do they have separate deadlines and stuff?
