Yes, you are correct. This gearbox trades RPM for torque.

This is NOT a gearbox. This is called a power reduction system. A gearbox allows the ring gears to rotate. Also, if you were just going to fix the ring gears in place, you really didn't need them at all. Since the planetary gears are fixed in relation to the various sun gears, you are wasting time making ring gears.

protoborg, the ring gears (actually called internal gears as the teeth face inward) are required and must be static relative to the sun and planetary gears. The ring gear provides a means for the mechanical ‘reaction’ to drive the planetary gear ‘carrier’ which in turn drives the sun gear in the next stage. Watch the video and imagine no ring gears in place, the planetary gears would just freely rotate and not drive the carrier, transmission through the system will stop. As for it being a power reduction system, well, I could go into definitions of power, work done, joules over time etc but simply put this system reduces rotational speed between input and output, and given the mechanical advantages between the stages, actually increases the torque output.

the definition of what gear-box for is to increase-decrease revolution and torque at input-output. in this case the RPM at the output is tremendous reduce, and surely torque at output would be tremendous big. this is great video, it's fun to watch, made by hands, eyes can see how it worked at low cost. planetary gear system always amaze me.
