I usally use a fine clean sand as my top filter...and i found the filtered water is so clear.

Not a bad build. I would replace the bioballs with lava rock. More surface area. Just rinse the lava rocks well.

Exactly what I was going to comment. A guy at a fancy outdoor pond/koi store told me exactly that, plus uv filter is golden. I haven't changed the uv bulb in a couple years, ouch. I've found recently changing the pond filter (55 gal drum) a couple times the last 3 weeks, has the water crystal clear.

Pumps probably running dry if you don't have enough water getting to it fast enough holes need to be bigger
