Structure is very important. Enjoying the instrument is important. I like the rare evenings I get a pizza and a pot of coffee and dedicate several hours to learning something completely new like a good song or dive into theory or new voicings/chords/positions. Its not straight playing practice, but more like a guitar party with many breaks and pauses, probably reading sheet music and tabs some.

Can you talk more about what "standards" are? You mention them at the end. Are they chord progressions?
@mattfranceschiniАй бұрын
"standards" or "jazz standards" refers to commonly played songs by jazz musicians. In the jazz community it is common to have tens to hundreds of these songs memorized which makes playing them with musicians you've never met or rehearsed with possible. Some examples of some standards would be Autumn Leaves, All The Things You Are, Take The A Train, My Ideal, Solar, Darn That Dream etc.

As a non jazz guy this sounds interesting. Thanks for the explanation

Any tips on choosing your handedness for guitar playing?? I’m stuck trying to figure out if I should playing left handed or right handed. I’m left handed and feel more comfortable strumming/picking with my left hand but holding a right handed guitar feels more natural but guitar picking/strumming is more difficult and doesn’t feel right. Idk which I should be playing but have both so I’m just trying to learn both rn.

Honestly if you aren't super committed to either yet I would highly recommend learning right handed. Nearly all guitar content and resources are made for right handed players and when you shop for instruments down the line you will have significantly more options. Some lefties get mad at me when I bring up this point but with instruments other than the guitar there are almost no examples of left handed versions (no left handed piano etc) and left handed players learn them fine! Playing the guitar is uncomfortable for everyone to begin with so if you learn right handed you're just ensuring that you can play any guitar that you may want to down the line and won't be worse off for it!

@@mattfranceschini so I own a generic right handed which was a hand me down and bought a left handed with $200 Amazon credit that I can return until January 30th. Would you recommend taking advantage of that and trying both until I find out what I’m truly comfortable with or just sticking to right handed due to the larger variety of options down the line?? also thank you for your input on the last question I very much appreciate it. I’ve always wanted to learn guitar but never took it seriously as a kid but now am trying to pick it back up as an adult.

Honestly I’d try to give yourself just a day or two to keep going back and forth and then pick an orientation and stick to it. It’s better to be comfortable and competent one way rather than not great at left or right handed. Again, if it was me I would strongly recommend right handed but at the end of the day it’s up to you!

This may or may not help. I'm left-handed and play right handed. That just felt more natural and made more sense to me that my left hand is strong and has more dexterity so that's the one that should be on the frets.

@ that’s hilarious! First time I’ve ever heard that phrase. It is true though. We need to practice scales and play songs. Appreciate your videos.
