Pro tip for this DIY slider: use a small rubber elastic band to pull the camera. It really smoothens out the hand fibrations and speed differences. This trick also works for rotational shots from a simple tripod with handle. Don't grab the handle. Instead tie a small rubber elastic band to the handle and pull on the other end of this band.

Brilliant design Matt! I took inspiration from yours to build my own (motorised slider). Instead of copper pipes like suggested, I used IKEA RACKA curtain rods. They are stiffer, lighter, already painted, cheaper than copper pipes and they perfectly fit with the U groove pulleys

The blu-tack trick was brilliant! For drilling, you can use a step drill to enlarge the holes. Easier to stay accurate that way.

Thank you so much for making this video! I recently designed my own 3d printer with a massive build volume of 300cm by 300cm. The only problem was that I wanted to used lighter, thicker 3/8inch (9.5mm) aluminum rods for the x-axis, rather than 5/16inch (8mm) steel rods, because the steel ones weighed twice as much, even though they were thinner, and I couldn't find the proper size linear bearings for the aluminum ones for cheap. Then I watched this extremely helpful video which gave me the wonderful idea of designing and printing pieces similar to the pulley bearings (at the size needed), and inserting skate bearings into them, allowing me to easily use my aluminum rods. It works perfectly, and without watching this video I would have never figured it out. It took me many tries to get the tolerances right, about 5 in total because I didn't have a caliper for measurement at the time, but now I've perfected it. I'll probably put all of the brackets and bearings I've designed on thingiverse and make a video about it, giving you your well deserved credit of course.

You can get a set of 4 rollers for 6-10 dollars plus free shipping, However I am watching this 5 years after developed during Covid-19 and have a 20-60 day shipping wait time... oh well I could try to find these rollers local and still waste time driving around, wasting a 100$ tank of fuel coming up empty-handed, this option works for the low-cost productions we do. we also ordered a 10$ green screen to see if it would even work. Sneaky trick: When making a long slide -- use a large elastic band to pull the trolley so that small hand movements don't have any jarring to them. Do the same with the fluid head tripod so you can slide sideways while panning the opposite direction to get super smooth moves.

Great DIY build! Now I just wish I had $45 burning a hole in my pocket... Just a tip for drilling metals: always drill metal at a slow speed. Long, curly shavings should be seen, not small flecks and dust. While copper is relatively soft for a metal, drilling harder metals such as steel require slow drill speeds. Drilling at high speeds while drilling metal creates excess friction and heat and rapidly wears the drill bit being used.

As a sound technician I am often amazed how bad the sound quality is on a video about sound. How can I take a video about sound serious when the video creator can't get its own sound good? This video about a video slider was absolute made in a great video quality. Information, rithem, paste, images, text and a great voice over all in good sound and image quality. A video exactly as it should be expected from a video maker. I LOVED to see such a professional video about a cheap DIY product. This video is a true example which I will use as an example on how it should be done. I will use aluminum instead of wood and will not scratch a complete painted pipe and maybe change a few other things but I learned from this video and enjoyed it very much. Also nice that you showed yourself in the end so the viewer can see the person behind all this. Thank you and keep up the good work.

First of all, I'd like to say thanks so much for putting this tutorial together. It's a really cool idea and I'm excited to hopefully see similar results to your slider. I'm in the middle of building this and it's really been a challenge, to be honest. I've made the rails and 3 supporting brackets and now I'm in the middle of creating the center platform(s). I know this is an older video and you're making new ones, but it would've been super helpful to have some sort of "master list" of the hardware and tools used to create this. I did my best to make a list while watching the video, but I've still had to make multiple trips to the home improvement store to find / swap out pieces. Particularly the length of the M8 screws, the corner braces, and stuff like that would be a big help. Again, I really appreciate you putting this and your other videos together. You're super thorough and do great work. P.S. to any American readers out there: consider finding a close match to these Metric measurements and replace them where you can with their Imperial equivalent. I've found that the Metric hardware and components are way more expensive at most stores and I'm wishing I had done this beforehand because all of the small pieces of hardware have probably accounted for ~60% or more of the costs of this project. My build cost is probably closer to $100 and then another $35 for the fluid head he recommends.

Should not even be that hard... Add another weel to the other side (like he did with his counterweight system) and pull a rope through it all. Then hook it up to a motor and voila, here goes your motorised slider system. The complicated part of this is getting a motor that's strong enough to pull everything and moves smooth enough to not ruin your shot.

Both the cobber pipes for the crane arm, some thing for the base (You could use a tripod for that depending on how massive your crane is), and use the same tripod head for the camera mount. All you need then is a counterweight that ideally weight the same as the crane-arm with mounted camera, and you are well on your way :P The tricky part would be to make the gimbal for the camera so its always pointed in the direction you want whatever angle the crane is.

One concern with copper pipe is I think it would be easy to dent. Drop it or accidentally dent it and your slider and it's useless. A better material carbon fiber rod which you can get off eBay in virtually any dimension

it turned out great! (sorry for the delay in response. Been on summer vacation). I used some different materials to try and minimize all noise. I used different chord as when I used braided line I could hear some scratching noises but if you are going to be using this for recording examples like in the video where original audio is replaced by music then it does work fantastic as it has little to no give. I actually used to climb so I used climbing rope instead since it has a smooth texture and you would be hard pressed to hear anything at all.

You can buy copper pipe at pretty much any diy store but where would you get aluminium or stainless steel pipe that isn't a lot more expensive.

+SuicideNeil how is aluminium going to be more expensive when it is literally the most abundant material on earth and very easy to work with? not only is copper heavier, it is much more expensive. at this short of a length (1500 mm) it'd be hard to notice the difference between this and a slightly thicker walled (22x1,5 mm is the thinnest i could find with that outer diameter) aluminium tube

where did you find aluminium that expensive? i found 22 x 1.5 x 3000 mm for € 10.77,- including VAT (netherlands)

Easier to find, and standard. Making a video, you can't really recommend things that people can't find. And you can't recommend things which aren't standardized. Aluminum and stainless steel tubing are more specialty items, and the specs could vary greatly based on supplier. They may be better choices for you, but they're not better for an instructional video, which has to take into account the audience.

nice video. thats ALOT of work. If anyone is interested in doing this MUCH simpler, you could use a premade slider, such as ball bearing drawer hardware. (that makes your kitchen drawers slide in and out) you can find very long sliders and you might get them free because people always remodel kitchens and throw the old hardware away. Its even more smooth and fluid and has a natural ability to regulate its speed. why "re-invent the wheel?"

Love the idea! The shots taken look amazing. I would probably find a way to stain the copper to match the plates. I know of a technique called "Bluing" but I'm not sure if it works the same on copper the way it works on steel. Also, I'd make a built-in level on the mounting plate for the camera, just in case someone only has just the camera.
