Not sure why it has taken me so long to make a replacement ramp for a vintage Star Wars Slave one. The ramp is pretty much always missing so I wanted to find a way to make something that everyone could copy. And I think this solution is a good enough and easy for everyone to have a go at. Lego to the rescue again.

Paper measuring tapes from IKEA are excellent for measuring curves - they can be drawn on and/or cut to length where required. More accurate than trying to roll a straight ruler around the curve.

A real gift is what you have, Dave. It is not only the gift of Imagination but there is an element of what I would call “DO IT NOW”. Most of us have dreams and most of those never get beyond that. You make yours reality. It is a virtue. Well done.

For the lines on the ramp (pattern) you can use a clear/see trough vinyl or decal stickers... or before bending the sheet you can use a wood carving tool to make the same patterns to give it a nice touch to the ramp.

in the future : make a template that matches the curving surface of the ship out of wood; clamp or secure with duct tape to the wood template, soak in boiling water for a minute or two, run under cool water to cure.

You can get a panel line scribe to put the lines on your ramp. You can get them usually is the model airplane section of hobby stores. 👍😎👍👌

Thats nice! Might I suggest trying a plastic called Sintra. Its an expanded PVC that is very malleable when heated. It curves much better than styrene and allows you to do more complex curves without getting that wavy warp that styrene gets. Plus when heated enough it becomes soft enough to press impressions into which would make it ideal to add the panel lines from the original ramp. Plus it sands much easier and smoother than styrene as well. Cosplayers had used it for years, although I think its kind of been replaced by the foam mat material most of them use now.

Great job Dave, simple but effective! With a ruler and sharpish instrument (maybe the edge of flat head screwdriver) you could possibly score the detailing thats missing, into the top of the ramp? Before the bending process begins of course! ;-) just a thought.

I always just shake my head an laugh your a genius. Instead of a heat gun maybe a hair dryer ?? If the water doesn’t get hot enough to bend it

You could make another but with the curve on the tail to match the rest of the ship. Then using some Dymo tape as a guide scribe the panel lines in there. A slight polish of the finished piece and it would be even harder to spot at a glance. I'm using your Lego pin technique to repair the cannon on my Millennium Falcon. Thanks!

An easier and more accurate way to measure a curved surface is to use a strip of paper, form it to the curve and mark it, then measure it flattened out.

For want of styrene a possible substitute could be pvc pipe. It would take a bit more work to cut and flatten it. But pvc is very maluable when hit with a hot air gun and keeps the shape you press it into once its cooled.

no cheating at all, i have made custom star wars toys in the past, and used all of the same skills polloi advertises. It is very satisfying, but extremely time consuming so the ROI is very low. If you were to create the 3d file then you will still use up a similar amount of time, but it is a one time investment. You can then share your work and if ever needed again you can print a replacement.pay the time 1x - multiple reproductions.
