Bartender 2.0: Marry it to a fridge to keep the drinks cool. Add a IR beam sensor to confirm a cup or glass has been loaded before drinks are delivered. Warning system for pumps running dry (out of liquid)?

I would argue that these drinks should be going into a shaker then either stirred or shaken to chill and dilute. The fridge idea, while good; is missing the mark a bit. The margarita mix (to me) is a good indicator that the emphasis is on the project and not the quality of cocktail.

The kind that likes their G&T ice cold even if they forgot to get or make ice. Naturally wouldn't put things inside the refrigerated part that don't belong (brandy, whisky, etc). Unless you mean refridgerating the whole thing, in which case, I agree bad idea, and the Raspberry Pi may not enjoy being iced.

Just because they used margarita mix doesnt mean you couldn't use tequila, sours, simple syrup, ect. You would just need more pumps. The whole point of this was the concept, or otherwise they wouldn't have made it so easy to edit

Maybe also add in a function to prime the pumps? Just add a menu item and then hold down the select button and it's spins them all so you can make sure everything is ready to pump and that it's the current liquid

bartender 3.0 add one proximity/weight sensor to check if there is a glass add a touch screen to make it easy to select a drink and configure and make new beverages and add alexa and/or google support to make it easy! and maybe a cooling environment to store all the drinks and something that checks if your bottles are full and maybe a web panel! hope you like this idea!

Weight sensor could also be used for measuring out the drinks, rather than running the pumps for a set amount of time like you do with mixing paint colours. Alcohol is 0.79 g/ml so if its 80 proof that (60% * 1.00)x + (40% * 0.79)x where x is the desired millilitres of lets say, vodka :)

Mike that's a good idea but instead they could have 6x RFID platforms and you slap an RFID tag on the bottom of each bottle that identifies it

I made one of these several years ago using Arduino with a LCD with touch panel. The peristaltic pumps have to low capacity, and i upgraded from 4mm tubing to 6-7 mm tubing. Still slow but did the work a bit faster. I recommend looking into small food graded pumps or even air pressure for a improved model.

This looked like a good and fun project BUT ... two things : (1) you could have made the box a bit larger to accommodate all the bottles (to hide them), hinged the back panel for easy access (or used velcro), then (2) drilled holes in the caps of all the bottles, inserted the hoses to the right depths of the bottles, then used silicone aquarium sealant (no odors or taste) on the holes and reused the caps on new bottles.
@jamescue7464

Also, you could have used a small refrigerator as your box, which would keep all the liquids cold!

hey great work guys! if i have a suggestion it would be use an air pump to push air into the bottles, with another tube displacing the liquid into the drinks. itll keep the drinks from passing through the pump itself (especially with the coke). you would need another hose for each bottle but it probably keep the fizz better and pumps lasting longer
@nomercyriding

Skorch he shows you in the video that the type of pump they are using does not have the liquid come in contact with the pump housing. It simply "squeezes" the tube full of liquid.

Also, if you drill a hole in the Coke cap, put the tubing through it, and then run the pump, it will create a vacuum on the bottle. Without any air backfilling the negative pressure being created, the pump will run the silicon tubing dry and it will eventually melt. You need to drill a second hole in the cap with a tube with a one way valve in it (allowing air in when the pump is running).

so everything that Rupert De Wilde mentioned. Bartender 2.0: Marry it to a fridge to keep the drinks cool. Add an IR beam sensor to confirm a cup or glass has been loaded before drinks are delivered. Warning system for pumps running dry (out of liquid)? But also a phone app (or PWA) that you cna do all the setup from a GUI. changing drink menu, lighting, maybe a cleanout function to runs through a session of pumping food grade bio-safe cleaning agents so you don't get cross contamination when changing drinks in the backend.
@linagee

Easy with a college-grade small mini-fridge. Just drill a hole in the side of it and run the tubes through that. (Don't forget to hack in a PID loop to the mini-fridge because it's price is cheap but it's thermal regulation typically sucks.) Also, to know that it's running dry: Hack up a scale that the drink sits on. This will also help you understand any irregularity in the fluid flowing at the very beginning of a serving.

My first two initial thoughts: How long does it take to prime the lines? Might want to add a prime lines option that runs all pumps just long enough to fill the lines so your initial drinks aren't ratio'd wrong. And secondly run the lines into a mini fridge base so all your ingredients are chilled.

Awesome project! I made a similar bartender robot 2 years ago for a school project, it had 15 alcohol and 5 mixer bottles, used WIFI with 17" LCD monitor and came with an app. Also I used almost exactly the same parts, pumps, relay boards, funnel etc. I kept running into the problem of losing all the fizz because it ran thru the pumps, something I didn't solve in the end. If you want any info or photo's of my project, let me know. I'm not a code genius but I'm sure I can help you out if you want to make a version 4.0

A few things I’d do is redesign the whole thing and design it like this: 1. Find or make some sealed dispenser bins (something like 3” wide, 9” deep and 10” tall or something the size of the dispenser area would be that’ll hold like a half to full bottle of Bacardi, etc) sloped to the center for the tube connection, that has a sealed, but removable lid for filling/cleaning. This would prevent fruit flies, etc and can be left filled. 2. Have 4 or 6 on each side of the dispenser part (in the middle) that way you can have one for jack, Bacardi, crown royal, bourbon, triple sec, etc. I’d put a thin black piece of material between each bin with a light smoke front panel in front of all of them and put a white led light above each one. When a drink is selected that uses Bacardi (for example) the light above the Bacardi would light up and you can see it through the front panel. So the ingredients being used lights up. 3. Have a flip up lid over the ingredients bins for filling etc. 4. Have more drink recipes, and include a multi line lcd panel for instructions. For example for a margarita, when selected it would say something like place a shaker filled with ice in the dispenser area, then after it dispenses it would tell you to shake and strain, or place in a blender and pulse, etc. 5. A sensor to detect a glass, etc is in the dispenser area to prevent dispensing without one. 6. Move the electronics into a false back that’s covered to keep them from getting wet, and replace it with a pull out drip tray under the dispenser for spills, over dispensing, etc. 7. Have a selection for size of glass, example for a Long Island iced tea, you can tell it that your using a 6 oz glass and it’ll adjust the portions for that size glass, or using a 12 oz glass, it’d adjust for that. 8. Keep the multi color led lights for the dispenser area. 9. Make a port where you can plug in a computer for servicing/updates via a usb cable, etc to make it easier for updates, etc if needed instead of pulling off the back, etc. 10. Glue the black plastic sheets you used on rather than screwing them on and maybe use a silver metal corner piece to put over the corners. 11. Put rubber feet on the bottom to protect the surface you put the automatic bartender on. 12. An option of selecting drink strength from no alcohol, little, moderate to strong... depending on the persons taste. Just a few things I thought of to take the concept to the next level. Oh and of course google Home/Alexa integration. Something like a diy version of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp_LZXqEeMyEfcU

before you change the liquid does it spin in reverse to empty the tube from the pervious liquid? And when the tubes are empty how do you compensate so that the right amount of liquid will end up in the glass since you dont have any flowmeter along the way? Cool project, loved it!

Firstly i like this channel and we could maybe add a priming and wash system of pipping and code... but it would still be relatively slow to pour a drink with a max 100mL flow rate....
@swekiller98
@swekiller98 6 жыл бұрын
You simply let the pump run for 1 min and the measure the amount thats in the class/bowl and then you know the flowrate and then you code a timer. so lets say it will pump 300 cl in 1 min and you want 25cl, just simply ad a timer that will let the pump run for 5 sec and you will have 25cl. these types of pumps are very consistent and will almost always flow the same amount off liquid/min
@JeremiahHisel
@JeremiahHisel 6 жыл бұрын
Just omit the funnel... bundle the tubes at the end so they all are above center of glass. The peristaltic pumps use suction so you may get a drip here and there, but nothing you would really notice. The pumps have a very regular flow rate. IE they are rated to move x amount of ml per second, so flow rate isn't really needed just adjust the amount of seconds they are on to determine how much of one liquid you want. I would however not use a peristaltic pump with a carbonated liquid. use a pump to force air into the top of bottle and have another tube at the bottom of the bottle which will then push liquid out of the bottle into the glass. That should help with keeping it carbonated. Not sure how you'd be able to determine the flow rate on that though.

I would add a small scale/load sensor under the glass. This could be used to verify the presence of a glass, notify of empty ingredient bottles, as well as (with a PID loop) measure the liquid volume. Also a raspi is unbelievably overkill for this project. Not a big deal, but a micro-controller such as Arduino would be much more suited, much more reliable, and wouldn't have the boot up time that a raspi has. Although network integration would take a bit more work. But overall I'm super impressed by the end result. The overall build quality and care of work you guys put in was fantastic. I'm sure it was a lot more work than what was shown in the video.

Hey! I've been doing some research for my own Robot Bartender and the different techniques for pumping liquid. There is the Peristaltic Pump which is the most precise but slow and expensive. Option two is using an Air Pump to over-pressure the bottle and with a submerged tube for the liquid to escape from, this is the cheapest option and the speed goes from slow to fast depending on how much you spend on the pump. Option three that I have not seen that much is mounting the bottle high and using a unidirectional Solenoid Valve and letting gravity do the work, speed should be the closest to pouring a drink, this is also a cheap option but require more work to setup and requires an air intake so it might not be the best for sodas. I would love if you could make a video comparing the tree techniques, it would be really helpful and there are no such videos so I think it would be popular.

Not shown in the video, the peristaltic pump used in the video only pumps 100ml/min. So for a glass like that you would need 3 minutes to fill. Add in the wait time between different ingredients (unless you have enough power to run multiple pumps simultaneously) and you might get a drink every 5 minutes.

12:54 A few moments later...Few points from my side : the pumps work slow plus drinks are outside so there is no storage for the liquor/ soft drinks that can cool it like a fridge . also the benefit of making it like a fridge you can provide Ice and adjust the machine to provide ice for the drinks or adjust it as you like it with or non.. Well i guess in the next project

You cannot put the cap back on the bottle as the bottle will get a vacuum; pulling the drink just as much back in as the pump is pulling it out. You could fix it with a one-way-seal but that is probably overkill

I think you should of had one air pump connected to containers then have electric valves connected to tubing instead, this would mean the fizzy drinks would always have positive air pressure container meaning they stay fizzy, the air pressure would push the liquid through the tubes.

The electronics being underneath is ideal for after a few drinks and you spill the booze all over them lol xD

At about 6:04 I've seen that you screw the multi-core wires directly into the terminal. They conduct better when you cover them with solder before, so that they have a silver end. Much more conductivity and less electrical resistance and power loss. :-)

If it a mobile bartender u have many different drinking glasses. So add some IR Sensor, they scan the container and calculate the volume.

I would add a cleaning option that would start all the pumps, so if you put them all into a bottle of water and a glass on the other end you can easily clean them before changing the liquors or spirits :)

you guys should add a weight sensor in the base to recognise what type of glass it had on, and it could measure accordingly

Just want to preface this comment with a big props to Hacker Shack, this is a very solid build and very well designed and put together. But as with everything, there's room for improvements, so here's a few tips, if you want to replicate this build: It's generally seen as a bad idea to not have a runoff tray under the cup holder. Spills WILL happen and it is much easier to slide out a runoff tray and empty/clean than to replace a wooden platform a few times a year. It's also generally seen as a bad idea to have electronics mounted underneath where liquids are likely to reach, such as under a drink dispenser with only a wooden board (with holes) between the liquid dispenser and socket voltage components. Put a sheet of plastic between the cupholder platform and the electronics, just in case, or move the electronics to the top of the frame. The build is also very rigid, not a lot of flexibility for future repairs or upgrades. Replacing the screws with something like furniture screw-latches will make it easier to disassemble and reassemble in the future. You could also add a hinge to the electronics compartment access hatch, instead of using adhesive tape, as the latter will run out of stickiness after only 2 or 3 removals. You also want to make the top as a lid, not a screwed down fixed part, as you will want to clean out that funnel once in a while. Especially if you use sugary drinks, as those tend to stick and eventually create mould.

Black wire should be on line terminal, line is input. Load is output going to a device on the circuit.

My suggestion was to add 3D printed mounts that would accept the bottles and tilt so that you don't have to worry about the tubes staying at the bottom of the bottles. This may also help with maintaining the seal for carbonated beverages. It would probably have to be a larger box and base to support the weight but it might provide a nice way to showcase "the well"

How about adding a load sensor so that it will only serve the drink if a glass is ready? Also, I'll recreate it to involve the Alexa voice service, and my home automation system so that I can push a button, turn on my fireplace, dim my warm white lights, plays my slow jazz spotify playlist, and makes me an Old fashioned. That's the dream.
