Yet another excellent video, especially the bit that showed the bottle warmer, because I have been looking at buying one of them, because I have very little space to work in(I am doing everything in my front room at home, for now and the foreseeable future), so I am keeping the pickle hot/warm, in a jar which I keep in a large mug of hot water from the kettle, on top of my radiator, until I can get a bottle warmer obviously..... I loved the ring, because I think that stone is a really gorgeous colour as well as a good size, and it’s made so that you can change the size a bit, isn’t it (?), I also really liked the tip of using split pins, for holding elements in place while you solder them, because those titanium strips that you can buy to do the same thing, are quite expensive, and those split pins aren’t very expensive, even if you buy a good selection of sizes to work with, are they.?.?. Jon.

Amazing, thank you for these! Do you have any videos on how to set a bezel on a curved setting? I’ve only ever done them on a flat plate before. Thank you!

How long is the piece of silver for the band?

Glad I came across your channel. Cool Ring. By the way, is your soldering board sitting on a ceramic plate? I hate the mess of vermiculite… maybe I don’t need it?

Really gorgeous ring Kim, I'm going to have a go at reticulation. Thanks so much for all your videos and guidance. You've helped me so much. One thing I'm a bit confused about, and I hope you can help me with this - I know about annealing and getting the right glow; and I've also read I can over anneal i.e. heat the silver for too long, too hot which can make the silver brittle - does reticulation cause these brittle issues? And finally, although not related to this type of ring as it won't need any more work than shaping - but if you need to, can you re-anneal silver after it's been reticulated?
@kimthomson400
@kimthomson400 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, annealing temperature is judged by the colour which is a dull pink glow. If you get your metal bright red hot while annealing, it can become brittle and once it is brittle, there is little you can do about it apart from using the silver for casting instead.

Thank you for these videos! I’ve been desperate to learn reticulation! What torch do you use? Would this work with a micro butane torch? I think it’s about time I upgrade!

Hi Vishal, they are similar to these soldering strips used to support your work: www.kernowcraft.com/products/silversmithing-and-tools/soldering/item/knew-concepts-titanium-soldering-strips-pack-of-5

Kim how did you set the tourmaline on such a bumpy surface? Did you sand down the area where you wanted to set the stone? As we all know, you need a smooth flat surface to get a good connection between the bezel strip and the surface to where you're soldering. Any tips or suggestions? Thank you for your great videos!
@kimthomson400
@kimthomson400 3 жыл бұрын
Ooow I can't remember as it was so long ago :) I may have just sanded as it's not a huge stone. Or often we make the stone setting with it's own flat base, then solder that onto the irregular surface.

Thank you for the video! Can I ask what gauge silver your started with, whether you were using "reticulating" silver or something else, and if you did something to make the inside of the ring smooth after reticulation?
@makeitwithkim-jewellerysil3126
@makeitwithkim-jewellerysil3126 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, it was 1mm thick, 10mm wide sterling silver. It was sat on a flat surface so the back didn't reticulate so I only had to give it a light sand and polish at the end as with any piece of jewellery. Hope that helps :)
