How to make a Round Rug!

I've been searching for a way to make a rug without having to do a lot of sewing and i don't want to use a needle. This is the perfect way! I'm so happy i found you. I have questions regarding measurements for a rectangle shape. If a 28" center makes a 2' x 4' rug, what is the formula to use to find the center for other sizes for example a 2 1/2' x 10' or 3' x 8'. Or is there another technique to use? Maybe one similar to how i would crochet a scarf? I'm sure the type of fabric is a factor as well, right? I'm planning to use 2 1/2" wide denim strips. Your help is appreciated. I'm so glad i found your video! I'm looking forward to starting my project!

Hi there! I'm glad to have inspired you! As far as measurements, for every trip around the rug it will add as many inches wide as your braid will be. For example, if you use strips that when braided together are 1 inch wide as a braid, it will add 1 more inch each time you go around one side, 2 inches wider in total because you are going back up the other side. So for every time you make a complete braid around, you'd be adding 2 inches out on all sides- top, bottom & sides. A word of caution about denimn: if you plan to launder it in the washing machine, it will fray. The only way to avoid this is to sew the ends inside each other, making each strip a "tube". Love this idea. Have never seen this braided rug. I had some questions. What type of fabric can you use? How wide are the strips?

It really depends on how thick you want your end product & also the thickness/ weight of the fabric you are working with. I plan to do another video on making strips in near future as I've gotten many questions on this.

Thank you so much for sharing! Came across your videos today & I love the method you use, which basically makes it Easy Peasy! I started a jean braided rug when my daughter was first born, (she just turned 33!) but I never finished it because it was so, so hard to sew. I have a feeling that rug is packed away in some old fabric box in the garage. As I am going through things, I just might find it. I've also got a few boxes of old jeans that I saved to cut up & start a project at some point. I was wondering if you could do a quick tutorial on fabric with no stretch, cotton, denim, etc. I am also wondering if you want to turn the round method into a basket ... would you just pull it tighter to bring up the sides? And once you get the sides started, go into the next loop like a straight stitch? If that makes any sense? I'm using the same no stretch cotton jeans. My boyfriend let me confiscate all his dirty, old, unused work jeans. it's taken a lot of washing but with 57 jeans i couldn't pass up the materials!

Hi! I'm glad you found my tutorial! As far as using non-stretchy fabric, it is done the same way, just a little more difficult to get your strips thru the loops but doable. I've never made a basket on purpose, but it happened alreasy from getting too tight a braid! I bet it would definitely work for you!
