This video tutorial details the process of making a Poly 75-70 polyurethane rubber mold of a concrete stepping stone. In this example, we utilize the "poured block mold technique", which is considered to be one of the most simple mold making methods.
Although the stepping stones in this scenario can be easily replaced through options at retail stores, this mold making method is great when you have a unique stone that is not replaceable OR when you'd like to produce custom pavers from your original design (made from wood, clay, a printed model, etc.).
A full list of materials and tools used for this project can be found at the end of the video.
The Steps:
1. Select a Model [0:32]
2. Apply a Sealing Agent (Poly PVA Solution) [0:53]
3. Prepare Model and Construct Mold Box [1:24]
4. Apply Release Agent [3:33]
5. Calculate Amount of Rubber Needed for Mold [4:13]
6. Measure, Mix & Pour Mold Rubber [5:03]
7. Demold [6:29]
8. Cast Concrete [7:24]

So dumb of many individuals whom rather write a negative comment on this video than a positive. You all negative peeps tend to know so much and yet do not make videos yourself. Obviously watching this video for a reason, because you simply do not know how. GREAT VIDEO AND YOUR TIME AND KINDNESS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

This is EXACTLY what I've been struggling to find! I started with some pavers I like alot, but was forced to pause construction of my patio. In the meantime company went out of business and I cant even find pavers that are readily accessible that are the same dimensions let alone look! This is PERFECT! THANK YOU!

I think some of the comments here are taking this project a bit too literally. Yep, it's a heck of a lot of time and expense to copy one ugly paving slab but that's not the point; it's a demonstration of potential. Using these methods and materials you could make some pretty unique cast concrete pieces, beyond practical limitations the only boundary is your skill and imagination. I'm inspired enough to give this a closer look. Thanks for the video Polytek.

Thank you for the video instructions. I like the way you clamped the mold frame & saw your other reply about it also being adjustable that way. I was looking for a way to make a mold to put a stone pattern on concrete fence gravel boards & concrete posts. Which this should allow me to do and of course lets you make a mold for many things, so thanks again.

Awesome video, awesome product. One thing I might add is that applying release agent to the bottom edge of the melamine sidewalls of the form might prevent rubber from getting between the bottom board and the sidewalls. Clay on the outside prevents rubber from leaking out but it can still seep down there, making demolding a bit of a chore.

Great job on the video instructions! Thank you for taking the time to do a professional job. I have some wood from an old barn we took down on our farm that I think would make beautiful pavers; however, I feel framing and other inside projects would be a better use of this beautiful wood. Making a rubber mold of the wood allows me to do both. Would this process work with wood, and, if so, will I need to modify the ingredients or amounts given in the video?

There are some stultifyingly short-sided comments on here about this video. I am totally inspired after watching it! I want to make concrete “pavers” from ceramic sculptures I’ve made that appear to be large fossils and archeological pieces. This is the exact information I need to know. One question, a comment on here mentioned using diesel fuel as a release agent. Would that not attack the material of the mold?

Good job. What did the mold cost? What is the maximum number of bricks one could cast from the mold before it wears out?
@PolytekDevelopmentCorp
@PolytekDevelopmentCorp 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph - Thank you for watching! This mold required ~11.2 lb of Poly 75-70 Liquid Rubber. A 16-lb kit of Poly 75-70 currently costs $143.00. This cost doesn't include any other supplies, including release agents, tools, mold box materials, concrete mix, etc., so the cost could fluctuate depending on what materials you already have on-hand. It's difficult to say how many castings you will get in total - it varies depending on a number of factors - the design of the mold, the use of proper release agent, mold maintenance, the concrete mix, etc. We have seen customers get hundreds and thousands of concrete parts out of a single mold.

@PolytekDevelopmentCorp
@PolytekDevelopmentCorp 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian - Thank you for watching! This mold box can absolutely be re-used. The great thing about this set-up is that the box can be adjusted depending on the project size (and then secured with the c-clamps). The only thing you need to be aware of is possible cross-contamination of different materials. As an example - if you were to pour tin-cured silicone rubber into the mold box and then come back later and pour a platinum-cured silicone rubber into the same mold box, residual tin compound from the first pour could cause cure inhibition in the platinum-cured silicone rubber.

@MrHydyr

Release agent is a special "mold form oil" it prevents concrete adhesives from sticking to the mold. BTW, domestic oil etc. won't work. Another possible solution is oil based benzine. Apparently this company has developed their own release agent, which is more practicle in use when it comes to the complex forms.

This system is too costly in both materials and time- the mold is unusable during the 6 to 12 hours curing time. I've found that a toggle clamp mould that can be struck after 1.5 to 2.0 hour initial setting time is best because releasing a toggle and a few taps on the frame is all that is necessary to free the framing from the cast paver without damage. Cuts in the paver to fit around the edges of the patio can be made with a spring steel scraper while the cement is still soft and thus enables one to avoidi the dust from diamond sawing when fully cured. Using a 12 x 6 inch tile bases attached to a vibration talbe, the paver can be easilly slid off the table onto a ceramic tile of the same thickness for curing on a stand and another batch of 10 to 20 tiles produced on the vibration table. For making the frame waterproof I've found acrylic polyester filler (bog) is best for pressure seals, subplimented with beeswax if needed.
