I live in Fife Scotland and was born in Aberdeen, I have been drinking Drambuie since I was 18 at on officers night out when I was in the Boys Brigade and fell in love with it. It was served with crushed ice and that feeling as it goes down the hits your stomach with a warm glow that no other drink can do, not long after I started drinking rusty nails and also malt whiskys, I am now 67 and malt whisky is still my top drink. Having been to a good few highland distilleries by the time I was 30 I have done away with the ice and only use a blend to mix with Drambuie at a 50-50 blend as it is a shame in my opinion to use a single malt. My fiend at the time when I started drinking whisky worked in Haig's of Markinch as a blender told me that most people who drink whisky and claim to be able to tell the difference can't really after a few drams as the way whisky acts on the taste buds with the exception of the strong peaty west coast bottles. Anyway to me it does not matter how you drink "the water of life" as long as you enjoy it. Slàinte Mhath (Pronounced Slanj-a-va) or cheers.

Drambuie has always been a favorite of my Dad.... a "half bottle" would last him 12 months....(he's never been a drinker!) But he's 94 now.... I bought him a full-size bottle a year or so back.... I reckon it'll last him until his centenary! Rusty nail was a favourite of my late wife...... RIP Darling. Thanks for the memories.

Hope he's still drinking it mate. My dad used to call Drambuie water of life. He was wrong unfortunately. The translation in celtic and gaelic is Uisge beatha, considering that at the time in Gaelic a b was pronounced as a c. you can see where this analogy came from. Apparently it's the whiskey that's the water of life. Doesn't make much odds with me,,, I will drink either gladly

I have a Drambuie story: when I was a young buck, I cared only about beer and vodka, because why would I care about any other booze. I had a house party one night, and a friend brought Drambuie, and told me it was Scotch. I had no desire to try it, until a long while later, late, with nothing else to drink, I drank my first glass of "scotch". Wow, was it good, now I knew why everybody "sophisticated" drank this, im now a Scotch drinker. That was until the next week, we went out to a club, I ordered a Scotch, neat. Wheeww boy!

So I had my wife come out for an extra week and we tried the Whiskey Experience at the top of the Royal Mile where they end with an opportunity to do tastings. I was generally good with most of them but my wife not so much. When it came to the Islay my wife wrote in her tasting note "So Bad. Everything bad. Burnt bad"... Just a small point - Monkey Shoulder is a Blended Malt (formerly known as a Vatted Malt) and therefore 100% Malt; rather than a Blended Scotch, which is a mixture of Malt and Grain whiskies.
@Veraxeon3 жыл бұрын
Different grains aren't a requirement for blended whisky right? Blended whisky is just different whiskies thrown together I believe. Which makes Monkey shoulder a Blended Scotch, but more specifically a blended/triple malt.
@jonathancole8333 жыл бұрын
@@Veraxeon Monkey Shoulder is certainly a Scotch, and it is blended: so yes, it can be described as a Blended Scotch. Its just that the term usually refers to a grain/malt blend, with the term Blended (or Vatted) Malt being a more specific description of a whisky like Monkey Shoulder.
@LaLiLuLeLoX3 жыл бұрын
@@Veraxeon Malting is just a process in the making of a specific type of whiskey. I do believe you can malt any type of grain. Single malt whiskey is made using malted barley. Malt Scotch will usually refer to Single Malt whiskey made in Scotland. You can make a single malt whiskey anywhere in the world. So a Blended Malt Scotch Whiskey would mean a blending of only single malt whiskeys from different distilleries in Scotland.
@Veraxeon3 жыл бұрын
@@LaLiLuLeLoX Yes that's pretty much what I was trying to say
@LaLiLuLeLoX3 жыл бұрын
@@Veraxeon I hear ya but your definitions were just a little bit off. Different grains ARE used to make whiskey. Different grains is whiskey. It starts to get specific depending on what type of whiskey you wanna create(Single Malt, bourbon, rye, corn whiskeys, etc). And blended would be defined as using whiskeys from multiple distilleries. I haven't heard of triple malt till just now. I looked it up and it refers to barrel ageing of unblended malt whiskey. Damn I just realized something. I've always thought the "single" in single malt referred to the fact that only malted barley is used but it refers to malted barley whiskey from a "single" distillery(aka unblended whiskey). SHIT!! haha...Silly me. It can get a bit confusing but yea I think all the crap I just said still makes sense!! hahaah

Just found your channel. Excellent. Loved "the story". The heather-based honey in Drambuie can make for a level of sweetness that can be overwhelming for "young" palettes. For older people, once your taste buds start to wane save for "sweetness", they can thoroughly enjoy Drambuie straight out of the bottle. My Gramma McGregor loved her double-thimble sized glass of Drambuie after dinner. For myself, and partly as a tribute to the wonder that my Grandmother was, I will mix 1:4 with Drambuie and Aberlour A'bunadh cask strength, and use orange rind zest around the rim, as well as leave a twist in the glass - akin to an Old Fashioned. The scotch choice is a little on the sweeter side (Oloroso sherry cask aged), but by reducing the proportions of Drambuie to 4:1, you get a nice balance of sweet, with the flavour of the sherried scotch. This is an ideal sipping cocktail. Thank you for sharing your recipe and technique to make "a good nail".

I just invented this. 2oz Drambui, 1oz lime juice, 5-6 shakes of orange bitters, shake with ice, poor all contents into a collins glass. Top with ginger beer. Give it a couple of stirs. It's kind of like a long island iced tea with that tang (even the color) with the sweet honey after taste at the end. I'm calling it a "sweet tea" :) Feel free to try it, share it, improve on it (just tell me hehe) Enjoy.

I used to fly quite a lot and ended up with access to the First Class lounge in London Heathrow, where they have a self-pour bar. For a few years until I changed jobs, I would mix myself a very heavy-handed "Turbo" Rusty Nail; 1x 18yo Drambuie + 2x Johnnie Walker Blue Label. It was fantastic but I hate to think how much it would have cost in a bar and I've never had the means to order one since!

I was literally just telling my wife about this drink, and how 10 of these got me 86d from Caesar’s Palace in Vegas

Best guy ever, I love your stories. Keep up the great work 👍 It was over 6 years ago since I had an old Rusty. I’m more into old fashioneds these days. But this time of year is probably best to re visit this drink. Cheers

My wife picked up Monkey Shoulder on a whim. Man, oh, man! About as close to a single malt (for a blend) that I've come across. By a long shot. Great choice! Like the idea of the lemon oil. I'll give that a try.
