Great idea, great video! I made one for each of my saws when I moved last year. Just an idea, you could use some small bungee cords instead of paracord. This can be bought by the foot at big box stores. Also, blocking the ends of the grooves with a small piece of wood will help keep it from sliding off the saw.

I don't believe I've ever seen this type of guard before. Quite a bit easier than a leather holster. Thanks, James.

My Grandfather was a master finish carpenter & cabinetmaker. He had a saw box; a long, narrow, wooden toolbox about 8" wide and just long enough for his longest saw. In the bottom, he kept 2 rip & 2 crosscut saws (fine & coarse) along with the backsaw for his Stanley Mitre Box. That saw was almost as long as his hand saws. The lid held 2 small, fine-toothed backsaws and a coping saw. That box went everywhere he went. While I like your idea for a blade guard, I have to say, nostalgia aside, I think I prefer the saw box idea better. It kept his saws out of the weather and away from getting banged up. Oh, and it had a short 'fence" on the hinge side of the top that he often used a bench hook for making short cuts. Thanx for reminding me of the box. Now I'll have to put that on my "to make" list... like it isn't long enough already.

I made my saw guards out of pine. Hold down straps were made of thin leather about 1/2” wide. One end was nailed tight with a copper roofing nail. The other end had a vertical slit that hooked over the head of another roofing nail that was left just proud of the guard surface. Very tidy and worked great!

When your saw is sharp, a blade guard not only protects the saw. It also protects you from the saw. I've ended up with a sore hand from an unprotected saw more than once. It's a sore point. Well, actually a whole lot of sore points. all along the saw blade. ;-)

I made saw guards a while ago for my saws. Best choice I ever made. Mine were a little deeper then you made yours. Like 2 or 3 inches. Then when I set up my shop I put an aggressive chamfer on one side and two holes and attached it to the wall. Works well as a holder/display. You can cheack it out on the KZbin channel “the bench top perspective”. I have not done much with the channel.

Thanks for the idea. I have some scrap lumber from a neighbor's dead apple tree (spalted and wormy), and I've been trying to figure out things to do with them. Looks like my old Disston #5 back saw and my old English back saw will have some protection.

I just use a piece of plastic U-Channel that's used for glass Finishing Edge. All the big box stores have it like HD. It slides over blade teeth and stays snug. Won't damage teeth.

This can be a fun 3D printing project. Instead of a rope, print clips that can clamp onto saw plate. Place a couple along the guard.

I would make this from plywood, and at the ends I would make a cutout for a wedge to hold it in place. And I would put strings to both wedges to keep them from taking a hike.

Cool project. I saw a Facebook discussion of these recently. A couple of guys, who have probably forgotten more about hand tools than I'll ever learn, mentioned that saw guards made from porous woods, like red oak, can actually draw in moisture and lead to rust issues on your saws. They recommended maple. So, I'm guessing you knew what they knew.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 10 ай бұрын
That is an old myth. Ring porus or defuse porus woods will do about the same. Moisture is so much smaller the the pours on eather of them.
@dannyhale7645

@@WoodByWrightHowTo , ah. I was wondering how it could possibly matter if it's stored inside. I was under the impression that all hard woods hold about the same amount of moisture in a climate controlled building, regardless of porosity.

I really wish i new what you were talking about. Its almost impossible for me to get through an etire saw sharpening before decied to finish it later and grab a another saw. In 4 days into sharpening 10 absolutely mangled chisels by way of sand paper. Its not going fast i can tell you that. I really need to get my bench grinder running again along with some diamond stones.

It looks great! I think wood is slightly hygroscopic, so I'm skeptical about storing a cutting edge in wood. Also, I'd be more likely to use something stretchy like TPU filament to hold it on so I don't have to tie it all the time. Looks great otherwise!

Bizarre thought of the day. With all the far reaching reasons for the nib on a saw, it could have simple been there to keep the string from falling off so the saw guard would fall off the saw...
