Your trucks are definitely getting better fuel mileage than what we’re getting over here in Canada. Over here, I know that we go by US gallons compared to imperial gallons, but that being said, my 2020 Peterbilt at best running through the Rocky Mountains running at about 35 tons, the best I can get out of it is anywhere between 4.3 to 5.2 miles per gallon.

Don’t forget too, the cetane level in Europe is higher than here in N America. Try adding cetane boost additive, make sure too that you’re tire pressure’s, filters and valve setup are all set correctly. I have a 378 with a Paccar and I’m returning on average 7.6mpg running 80k/lbs most trips. Another thing is, drive it like a truck and not a car, let it do the work instead of bullying it….easy on the throttle, and make max use of your jakes!!

Lets start with a smalltalk about fuel cost and ecodriving with driver first, shall we? Systems are not bad, wrong usage is. I'm in a company truck, just transferred into a new 2023/24 Freightliner Cascadia for Conestoga Glass. (Was just straight flatbed before, no more tarping with the conestoga/rolltop) Already had it in the shop once on my first load, hadn't even put 600 miles on it at the time, and soon as I hit the southbound hill in Wheeler Ridge, CA I had steam shooting out the hood. Turns out I had a bad 4 way valve going into the heater core and a pin hole in a pre-formed line. Aside from that haven't had any other issues, so far. Fuel economy is already worsr than my previous Cascadia, only averaging 5.5 MPG so far, though I do run heave in the mountains a lot. (76-80k LBs) Hoping as it breaks in some more it'll go up a bit. The turbo sure sounds weird though compared to my previous 2019 Cascadia. Odd whistling or chirping noise whenever I'm accelerating or climbing a grade. Not sure if Detroit changed it, or what. May have to ask the techs at our yard or something. Kinda annoying the adjusting to a new vehicle these day means troubleshooting all thr little quality control issues..

Does altering the engine management system not damage the ECU like I have heard with people chipping Scania engines has caused damage
@tjroelsma3 жыл бұрын
This looks like a set that's simular to a Power Commander as used on bikes. It's a piggyback system that changes nothing on the ECU, just changes the data from the sensors somewhat to trick the ECU into believing the circumstances are different from what they actually are, so it alters things like fuel injection, turbo pressure/wastegate actuation and/or airintake.

Thank you for another interesting video. I suppose Scania et al don't do this "overclocking" themselves because they are in the business of mass production of a standard product. I wonder if there are any downsides such as lower reliability, shorter engine life? Or maybe the reverse is true! Hope designers get to hear your feedback on all the flaws you pick up.
@SerenaBluee3 жыл бұрын
You're right about Scania leaving power and economy on the table in order to keep reliability and engine life at a maximum. Making any substantial increase in power will almost always reduce engine life and potentially reliability (you can't change the laws of physics), although how much can be difficult to say. With only a remap or 'tune' you're not increasing power by reducing restriction or making other physical changes, so it's probably increasing the boost level and fuelling which will spin the turbocharger faster and cause that to wear out slightly sooner, as well as increased wear on engine bearings and other components as a result of the higher cylinder pressures and loads within the engine, as well as increased heat for the oil and coolant systems to deal with. Big increases to the factory boost pressure setting can also make the turbocharger less efficient if it's operating out of its intended speed range. On a car where the actual time at high engine loads is minimal, I'd almost always use a "stage 1" (no physical change) remap, especially on a turbocharged car to get the most from the factory setup. But on a truck where they are frequently operated at medium to high engine loads for long periods, I'd probably keep it as Scania intended to maximise reliability.

@@SerenaBluee Thanks for the detailed reply. 👍 I know there are warranty and statistical reasons why any manufacturer will want to keep things vanilla. Engineering best practice is to design in some margin for error to protect against defects, abuse or extreme conditions.

Hi Stavros, what a very entertaining video! I‘m still laughing! „An engine, that runs more economically and achieves more power at the same time, is definitely not possible!“ This is a very lucrative business, nothing else! You pay big money for a big fairy tale! All electronic changes in the system, are stored in the control unit! Scania (and everyone else too) deny any warranty at the entire vehicle!
