How to Make a Scrub Cap with a Ponytail FREE PATTERN - DOWNLOAD

I am a quilter, not a garment maker at all. When a friend in health care asked if anyone could make these, I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I got your pattern and made them without a hitch. To have the video was very valuable and I watched it several times during the process. I didn't have any ribbon and couldn't go out to buy any. So I made 15 inch long draw strings to attach the elastic to and it worked just fine. You are doing your part to fight the virus by offering the pattern free. This was simple and easy to make. I made several for my daughter and her friends (medical students). The caps fit the friends perfectly but my daughter has long hair but not a lot of it. I made the cap, then reduced the space on top of the cap 1/4 inch all the way around. It then fit perfect. It cost me about $2 to $3 per cap.

Thank you for this pattern with a ponytail. As a nurse, I can tell you that there is an increasing need for scrub caps. I am interested in these as I have long hair and I need to braid my hair for it to somehow stay in a regular cap. I like that there is a button to hold our masks, I see some nurses' ears are getting raw and they are using a bandana/tie headband or safety pins/paper clips to give their ears a break.

Can you leave the elastic out and just use ribbon. Elastic shortage.

Yes you can. Use 36" to start off with. You can always shorten it. Find the halfway point of the ribbon and secure at the very bottom seam (ponytail part). Stitch back and forth thru a couple of times. I hope this helps.

The head part (tear drop shape) has an area that is cut on bias, so that causes it to stretch a bit. You have to be careful not to pull it.

Have you ever worked with a water resistant fabric on a scrub cap? I am a dental hygienist preparing to return to work and i have zero sewing knowledge however am researching options. I came across a fabric called ottertex that is a polyester but seems like it may be difficult to work with. one cubic yard is 11oz and .55mm thickness. Your caps are beautiful!

I have no idea about that fabric. I have worked with pul fabric which is waterproof. It is a polyurethane laminate used for making diapers and snack bags. It was easy to work with. Ottertex sounds heavy and would probably be hot to wear for a scrub cap. It's best to look at its recommended uses and also look at the product reviews.

Hi. How do I modify the pattern if I don’t want the cap to cover my ear. I have been folding it in, but is there a way to make it smaller so it falls above the ear?

I have been thinking about your question. This would be the easiest. Once the cap is completed and before you add the buttons for the mask. Put the cap on. Find and mark the center of the back of your ear. Run a gathering stitch from the front edge of the band, to the edge of the crown. Secure the stitching. Hope this helps.

The ribbons ive been using are fraying (i burnt the ends beforehand) can i use bias tape to use for the ties?

Oh yes!!! You can1use bias tape or make ties from the fabric.

I used 5/8" because that was what was available. I don't think I would go over 1". You can also use bias tape or make fabric drawstrings.

You can actually use whatever width you would like to or whatever is available. This pandemic has stretched us to be creative!!! You can even make fabric drawstrings if you would like to.

Hi if your sewing a fabric with a pattern do you sewing wrong sides together?

You sew with the right sides together. I assume you are asking about the direction of the design. For example if you have horses running. then they might run up one side of your head and down the other. I just cut some fabric with a flower pattern. I put the stems toward the forehead and the blossoms toward the crown. That way when the nurse lock down at a patient, the flowers are not upside down. But, right sides need to be stitched together.
