Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm thinking of a similar contraption for a Velux window, but for completely blocking the light.

I built 2 of these using your video as a guide. It was inexpensive and relatively simple, but most importantly...effective. Thanks for sharing.

Is it safe using cardboard? I was thinking of doing the same but just holding the cardboard under the screen to get the measurements, in just few minutes the cardboard got so hot! And heat acuminated in between the cardboard and the screen was too much good enough to cause fire. How was your experience?

Great inexpensive idea. I followed your lead and used a vinyl room darkening shade instead of the landscape fabric. It stretched tight, no wrinkles and blocks light and heat completely. Great Job.

This is the gift that keeps on giving. This was a great tip, and a simplified solution worked well in my case. I went on the roof of our small ranch and used twine to loop around the material on the exterior of our skylight. I had few rolls of weed barrier laying around, so it didn't cost me a dime, but the reduced sunshine/heat coming in through our main bathroom will save us a bundle. It will come off easily at the end of this so-far brutally hot summer. Thank you for sharing.

An easier way...measure your skylight, buy 2 tension drapery rods. Buy or use old old curtains/sheers or side door panel sheers closest to skylight size. Cut one end a little longer if needed & make a 2-3" pocket for rod to slide through. Slide tension rods through ends, extend rods till tight at top, repeat at bottom. Make sure finished edges are facing down toward room.

I had already been thinking this, so I'd bought tension rods. Found a stash of IKEA curtain rings with clips (so you don't even need to sew the pocket... any length of fabric will do) and an old curtain panel. Done! Took 10 minutes to assemble.

Love this quick and easy and cheap soulution. Also like the below suggestion that aluminum foil can be laid on top to reflect light back out. Also like the suggestion below about using Styrofoam with Foil already glued to one side, so you don't have to do much except cut to size, and put up. Love your idea, and all the builds people have. I'm leaving for the store now. I have two skylights that need some screening of sun light.

This is a great idea!! Thanks for inspiring me to finally make a shade for my skylight. Inexpensive solution. I used shade cloth from the garden area of Home Depot 75% coverage, black. I think you can order up to 90% coverage online.

What I want is to connect the bathroom and bedroom like yours. Sounds like a great idea to share air purity between the two rooms!

Great idea for sky lite shades I have been trying to figure out away to reduce UV light and heat in my house, Instead of thumb tacks, they have a spring tension rod that will fit a sky lite. Again great job.

It's a good idea to dim the lighting but heat will still transfer thru, maybe even more so bcuz black attacks heat. I've seen this sheet of styrofoam with some type of reflective foil on one side at home depot. Face the foil upwards. Reflective material will retain heat but not transfer it into the house.

Spray some clear flexseal.on the glass and put foil shiny side up. It's what I had. The moon at night. Summer heat. Early morning rise. No naps made me do it. Unfortunately the bedroom is too dark in the daytime now.

The look of disappointment when he put it up... hoping it would be really dark then says.. “this is why chose this material” 🤣🤣🤣

Oh my god.. you guys are so lucky to live in a hot country. Plus, I'm sure your skylight is cheaper than the $70000 COELUX fake skylight that we may have to buy over here at the other side of the atlantic - because, a real skylight will just give us gray sky / rain most of the time.

but to his point, if that's what you're going for just use a better fabric that blocks more light; the good info is still there.

Of course it looks cheap. That's why I used the word "cheap" in the title of the video. What makes you think this has anything to do with a day job? Too bad your comment had no point.
