Actually the current in MOT looks like that because iron core is too small and it begins to saturate near to the peaks of input voltage. Microwave oven manufacturers try to save money as much as possible, and transformer steel is not cheap. Hope this comment doesn't get lost in gimmie shit. UPD: to not get you confused, of course I meant "near the voltage peaks considering the phase shift between voltage and current". Thanks for likes, guys!
@zx8401ztv6 жыл бұрын
No it hasnt, thanks for the info :-D
@the_ALchannel6 жыл бұрын
Also there is a simple way to show this: take small (5-10VA) 220-12V iron core step down transformer, and slowly raise the voltage on its 12v winding with your variac, starting at 0V, monitoring the current; if the transformer is good, at 12v you will see nearly a sine wave current, but as you will go higher, the current will become more and more like shown in the video, because beyond nominal voltage the core will start to saturate.

@jessstuart74956 жыл бұрын
I used some 12ga wire, and a couple of spare banana plugs to make a shunt to install across my DMM's 10A current meter inputs. I used a power supply and 2-ohm power resistor to put 1.000A through the current meter, then adjusted the length of my shunt until the meter read about 0.1A, with 1.0A actually flowing through it (divide by 10). I had to trim and resolder the wire multiple times, but after about 5 tries, I got to 0.098A and called it good. This allows me to make current measurements beyond the range of the DMM with reasonable accuracy (5% maybe?). This shunt only works with this one particular DMM, and only on the full DC-amp (not mA or uA) rotary switch setting. I don't think I would use this to measure anything over about 40A for any extended period. The shunt would start to heat, and it's resistance will increase, causing error. I always plug the shunt into the DMM first, then the leads into the top of the banana plugs of the shunt. That way, I don't pop a fuse on the DMM if the shunt comes loose.

Man i really need DA METTA or the osciloscope to make a flyback driver, then make a nitric acid generator with it, then make silver nitrate with the nitric acid+silver (silver removed from old x-ray films), then make a telescope mirror (silver to reflect) to make a telescope. pls, a lot of science going on here :) just need the tools

also it will be extremelly useful for future projects.

He's setting his autotransformer to 100 amps despite the side saying the fuse is rated for 25 amps. So I'm guessing the smoke from his transformer would be from the wire he used in place of the fuse to let more than 25 amps through. In other words, the illusion of stupidity is broken!
@Pageportal4556 жыл бұрын
Nothing\ no! The 25amps is the maximum input current and not the output current. So 25 amps at 120v which equals a power of 3000 watts. So as long as the output power is less than that, you are good to go ans everything is safe.

Amazing Tech - What you said would be true for a transformer with separate primary and secondary windings, with VA-in equals VA-out. But since this is an auto transformer, there is just one winding and a carbon brush. The winding and brush current rating is limited to some maximum value, regardless of the voltage setting, otherwise you will let the smoke out.

Solar Fluxman, an autotransformer is not an exception to the rule.
@defaultuser0006 жыл бұрын
The smoke and a spark at one point, seemed to be coming from the point where the carbon brush touches the transformer windings. This point is usually the failure point due to the resistance of the sliding contact. And an auto-transformer isn't an exception to any rules. If you have a transformer with 2 windings that takes 120V/25A(3kw) input and it's rated to output 100V/30A(3kw), and then you load the secondary down to the point where it is outputting 30V/100A(3kw) the transformer will probably go up in smoke. It's still outputting the same power but the secondary wire isn't thick enough to handle the extra current, even though it's the same amount of power. This applies to an auto-transformer/variac just as well. Since it's a single winding of a single thickness of wire, there is a point where the current flow will be too much for the wire thickness to handle, it will get hot, and it will fail. This maximum current point is independent of where you have the output voltage set and at lower voltages can occur well below the rated power output. The resistance of the carbon brush contact also has current capability that is independent of the voltage. Current flowing through a resistor creates heat. The copper transformer windings, the carbon brush, the connections inside, ect., all have some parasitic resistance and therefore have a maximum current carrying capability that is independent of the output voltage. The variac isn't an exception to any rules, it's just following the same ones that apply to any other transformer or circuit in general.
