John, I never thought I would be capable of doing this. I don't know any silversmiths, or any jewelers but I got started on my own just a couple months ago. And tonight I just finished my first turquoise ring thanks to you and your awesome tips. Thank you! You are a true blessing! My journey has begun ..

Thank you for your teaching style. I am excited to start my smithing journey. I am still watching and learning. I have made one ring in a class taught by a wonderful lady. We did the wire solder, however it was a solid ring shank. Had it been a split shank, I think this method is the way to start learning!

Great video. Thank you. I'm just learning silversmithing. I fell in love with the process in college after taking two courses and always wanted to get back to it. Your video was very informative and easy to follow and gave me a lot of good ideas I haven't yet learned. I just made a two prong ring shank ring and spent a lot more time than I needed to filing and sanding the prongs. I can see that it would have looked good without.

Hi! Awesome video! Thank you! I noticed when you added the twisted wire tightly that you left scratches on the bezel. I didn't see how you got those out without taking too much metal off of your bezel. I've been making my really tight as you suggest, but getting those scratches out. Yikes! Thank you for your help!

When you come to the sawdust part, what if your stone is translucent and not opaque? What would you do to level/raise it in that case?
@lorikell6216
@lorikell6216 Жыл бұрын
I use some fine silver wire, just a ring around the inside of the bezel (sterling may tarnish and there is no way to polish it after your stone is set). If your stone is set unevenly you can place wire on just one side. No need to solder it in. The size of wire depends on how much you want to raise it.

What is 'Joy'? Is it a kitchen detergent or a non foaming detergent for jewellery similar to that which is used in jewellery tumblers? another question: I see that you have a little square-ish container containing a yellowish liquid. I used to use one as a dispenser for soft solder resin flux remover years ago but I haven't seen one for ages. Would you mind telling me where you got it please?
@DurangoSilver

Joy soap is dishsoap. It is harder to find this brand, but it seems to work better than others for jewelry. The square container I bought from Rio Grande Jeweler's supply. Don't buy the cheap one. Go for the more expensive one.
