Excellent video! I have procured most tools now. I am only short of a marking gauge and a marking knife, that nowhere to be found down here. I'll be using a sharp penknife for a marking knife and will try to build a marking gauge myself. Thank you for lessons.

RobertoDonatti Great stuff. Let me know how you get on with the gauge. Happy woodworking, Mitch

I really like the tip about making a notch to start the saw cut. Very useful, thanks.

From what I've seen you have a easy way and the knowledge to explain hand tools/method which was why I was surprised when you misidentified the cutting gauge as a marking gauge. They are two different tools used for specific jobs when laying out your cut lines/marks and each act differently depending on what type of materials or you are using.

I've adapted the knife in this cutting gauge specifically for accurate marking (something the pin style making gauges are poor at). I guess it's a hybrid of the two, so my naming of it as simply one or the other is misleading. Golly good spot though - your the first to comment on it as far as I recall.

Hi! Since it's a small scale beginner's project I thought I'd ask here. Here it goes. Is there a rule of thumb on when you do not need to pre-drill based on wood piece proportions? Let's say I've got a 3/64 (over 1 mm) nail and a piece under 1 inch thick (~24 mm). How wide would that piece need to be for pre-drilling to be obsolete? For oak and alder for example. I've got some 20x20 mm alder pieces I need to nail through. Normally I'd test this out but I've got no spare alder (stupid to begin with, I know) and besides such a rule would be helpful to have anyway. Any other tips on the subject?

I usually stick to the rule: If I don't want to risk the wood to split or the nail to bend then drill first. This normally means I pre-drill all but construction projects!

Nice little project, would make my grandchildren a nice place to store their pencils and crayons besides on the floor! Ha!Ha! I bought a right nice flat spokeshave from online. It is made by Faithfull Tools, Kent, U.K.You may have heard of them? For the money and even shipping was not a bad price. May need to smooth up the bottom a bit, but other then that, It's ok.Thanks again! Take care.

***** wish I could get my teenager to put her stuff away in boxes! A small investment in time should get that spokeshave working like a dream.

We had 4 girls my oldest is 43 and my baby35 and we also have 7 grandchildren, so yes we know all about picking up behind them! Oh yeah, That company I bought the spokeshave from, I just purchased a Faithfull Toll Honing guide, Looked exactly like the one you have. I got chisels and planer blades that need some attention!. Thanks again, Take care!

If you buy a better plane later on, you can convert the cheaper plane into a scrub plane.
@getintowoodwork9 жыл бұрын
deezynar Indeed. Also, you'll want a plane with you when you visit the timberyard and want to assess sawn boards - best not to take your best plane into that environment.
