I used wood from an old head board, I'm thinking this one is maple , I've tried some xylophones using pine and oak and they didn't turnout too well, looks like you should stay with a hard wood with straight grain for best sound results. I made some with old wood palets and they turned out sounding great. Hope that helps. Cheers.

interesting points ,if anyone else wants to learn about how do you make a marimba try Jaffacter Instrument Builder Coach ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my friend got great results with it.
