Thanks for putting this up I've had a gallon bag full of beef sinew sitting in my closet for years and until now there hasn't been a video that I found helpful in turning it into cordage. I love your channel and you've really helped me expand my knowledge of primitive skills. Keep up the good work.

Hey Shawn, I used to take my sinew like that also, next time you get a deer take it off after you skin it but before you start butchering if you want longer sinew, it travels pretty deep into the ham muscles.

nice video very well explained , ive just finished my first primative survival bow and wanted to make a natural string for it , roughly how much sinew do you need, ie how many back straps is the one enough?

after you made the sinew bow string and let it dry, can you add wax or fat to it to make it weather proof?

Thanks Shawn. Rhetorically, How on earth did you learn this stuff? p.e. Please read some of these comments below. There are some good questions. like how to water proof this bow string? And cordage plants?
@ryansy70607 жыл бұрын
garry king For waterproofing a sinew string you could try beeswax but waterproofing it will make very heavy. For plant fibers, you can try dogbane, milkweed, yucca, agave, flax, hemp and abaca.

awe, the next of the awesome primitive bow string videos, so great, thanks for that shawn. I asked in the last video already, but in case you have missed it: Would you considder making a video about rawhide bowstrings? With all these rats you trap in your other videos, you should have more than enough pelts to do some great bowstrings. I'd love to see your take on it, mine always get a bit wonky, maybe you have one or two ideas that could help me improve.

I don't understand how when dry it's hard. so how is it pliable when it dries as a string?
@masonheipel7 жыл бұрын
Sade Storm It's stiff because all of the fibers are joined into a sheet. When the fibers have been separated and twisted, it lets them move separately, and each individual fiber isn't super stiff. The analogy isn't perfect but think about a sheet of steel vs a steel cable.
@TheHibbitydibbity7 жыл бұрын
Sade Storm It's still reasonably flexible when it dries. You can bend and twist it without it snapping or breaking.
@whomagoose68977 жыл бұрын
Always wanted to know how sinew was used to make items. Does anybody know how durable these sinew strings would be? Do you have to process it, as you do for leather making from the hide?
@masonshaw40977 жыл бұрын
Whomagoose Long ago soldier to my knowledge sinew is the strongest natural cordage. Its only weakness is water and you can fix that by coating it in bees wax.
@jeffreyarnold26267 жыл бұрын
no it's a bit different, more like working in rawhide. it has amazing tensile strength, and once it dries it stays together pretty well if twisted like this guy shows. i back bows with it using hide glue. imagine natural fiber glass. i do serving wrap the ends where the loop is before i let it dry. also in sinew.
