How To Make An Epic Slingshot Out Of Plastic. An informative tutorial done in time lapse with narration so you get a ton of information in a short period of time.
Link To The Jig Saw I Used In This Video: amzn.to/2zPAI1R This thing has served me well for years, and with its very reasonable price tag, it makes it easy to get into some simple projects like this, without breaking the bank. It's not the best jig saw on the market, but for the beginner, looking for a budget item, this one is hard to beat, and I would definitely recommend it.
In this video I have done my best to cover everything you need to know to make your own slingshot out of HDPE. HDPE is and amazing material, it stands for high density poly ethylene and it is nearly indestructible. It is a type of plastic and it is very soft so it can dent but it is so dense it is almost impossible to crack or puncture. This makes it an ideal material for making slingshots out of (although it can be a bit slippery). I hope this helped any of you who are interested in trying it. And I hope you will give it a shot!

Thanks! I think heat does it, so a heat gun or maybe a torch, not 100% sure though.
@disband_thebbc5933
@disband_thebbc5933 Жыл бұрын
Yea when you start getting up to the higher grits go over it with a heat gun keeping it moving so not to over heat in one spot. It will get hot and tacky to the touch and will both burn your fingers and leave finger prints in the finish, so be careful and either leave to cool naturally or quench it in water and dry it before moving up to the next grit. When you're happy with the finish you can buff it on a cotton buffing wheel if you have one available with polishing compound for a mirror like finish if that is desired.

sweet. I don't want a fancy one. looks are not my issue, I just want a good frame, and got an idea what I'd try to do if I did it my self. I lack power tools so I'm dead in the water for now. I want one I could use both bands and tubes, and have a good reference point on the fork, beyond that, a rough blank would do perfect. I can file and sand it to fit later. you do good work. keep it coming

Very light bands and ammo, pulled to their absolute max. If you want to follow in his footsteps he has some great tutorials on his youtube channel on how to get those high speeds. I honestly have no idea about that. I know HDPE is very hard to join and often fails if tried. I know there are ways to do it, but can't recall them specifically. I think you can plastic weld them together but again you'll have to ask someone who knows more about it. I think "youllshootyoureyeout" on the forums is very knowledgable about HDPE.

Where did you say you got the HDPE blanks from? My hearing isn't what it used to be due to bad choices as a youngster lol. Good job, by the way, young man. Its always good to see young people building things made of pure awesomeness with their hands, and getting outside and actually DOING things, rather than wasting their youth on videogames and such.

Here's the link: simple-shot.com/ It's were I get must of my slingshot supplies from. Great service and everything is generally priced well although shipping can be a bit expensive. Each blank is only $5 bucks I think. Ha thanks! I play my fair share of video games but I always come back to working with my hands. Much better return for your time. And it makes me extremely proud to be a craftsmen :). Thanks for watching and commenting! Josh

+christianne Mirguet Thanks for your comment! Sadly it appears simple shot doesn't sell the boards anymore. Probably your best best is finding a super thick HDPE cutting board. They are usually white I believe. I have heard they work well. Or try to find a sheet of it online, but it will probably be pricey. You could also attempt to make your own out of milk cartons. Hope this helped!

You said HDPE is hard to finish. I made a slingshot out of HDPE recently and all I did was sand it to 300, steel wool it, then took a torch and lightly went over every inch of it and the finish is beautiful. I was tempted to put some clear coat on it but it hasn't been necessary. Hope that helps.

I wish I had your eyesight lil' brotha! Hey, I've had some HDPE or HDPV plastic, 3/4" thick I made a couple of slings with, and the bands kept slipping out because this stuff is mega-slippery. (came from playground equipment). I literally had to fold some small pieces of 80 grit sandpaper, glued inside, and put them between the bands and forks to give more grip.
@sharpshooterjd
@sharpshooterjd 8 жыл бұрын
:D. Yeah I feel you, it happens a little on this one if I recall, I think that is why I used so much material to tie them on. It's been so long since I have shot it though I can't quite remember. What if you roughed up the surface with some course sandpaper? Do you think that would help?
@richardpeterson3753
@richardpeterson3753 8 жыл бұрын
one thing on this type of plastic, will it hold up in cold weather? I pretty much prooved Pvc bows are impossible to use in cold weather a while ago, it exploded one day when the winter weather came in. and it was a really stout and well made bow. Pvc just won't tolerate the cold. I hope this stuff will do Better, I live in Salt Lake City, and it's cold alot here

Nice vid man but there a a few things that you could of done better you were saying that the sheet was 5 dallah thats expensive for me you could easly make 2 slingshots out of that sheet and you can work your slingshot of with metal sandpaper and realu soft sand spunges
@sharpshooterjd
@sharpshooterjd 9 жыл бұрын
Ties De vos Thanks! If price is an issue try to find a cheap white HDPE cutting board. They should only be a couple of bucks and you could make a bunch of slingshots out of that. Also I am pretty sure you could cut the slingshot out with a coping saw. Again you should be able to find those for pretty cheap. And you can just use regular sand paper and sanding sponges like you said to shape it and round the edges and everything. Hope this helped! Josh

Yes! It would probably work especially well with HDPE because it's so soft. HDPE's claim to fame is it's virtually bullet proof. Which is pretty cool but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. It feels just like plastic to work with, which to me is annoying. I'm used to hard wood where you can get the surface really smooth. It does make it easier to work with hand tools though. Give it a go and send me pics of what you come up with!

Do you mean like Bill Hays? I have seen him use a solid template, a band saw and a router and he can seriously crank out HDPE slingshots. Sadly I don't have either a band saw or a router. And I don't need to make slingshots in bulk so it's not to high up on my priority list. Although that would certainly make it easier on me :). Josh
