Just did this with our lead Porsche Tech at work about a month ago. He didn’t think it would work at first, but I came out and did it for him. Didn’t know it was a common thing to do, I just thought of it. It’s pretty sweet and saves a ton of money for euro diesel owners and helps the environment a bit at the same time. Win-win.

Next do one for blinker fluid. I'm always spilling it.
@hunterjohnson73933 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. Obviously the nice thing about the small bottles is that they are 100% sealed, so no spilling is possible. Please explain where I get this wrong: To use your funnel, you (1) screw it in to the DEF screw nozzle, (2) fill the funnel with DEF, (3) push the funnel down as normal and watch the DEF flow into the tank. Eventually you get to needing less than a liter, so you (4) fill the funnel as normal, and (5) press it down. No longer a closed system, (6) the weight of the DEF in the funnel (actually, air pressure on a larger surface area than the hose) will push the fluid through the hose once the tank is full, and I presume you'll see fluid simply circulating through the funnel, out of the hose and then down into the tank, and this is your clue that the DEF tank is full and to stop pressing the funnel downwards. Correct? Also, this makes putting the vacuum hose on and turning it downwards is a MUST.

Cheapest place to get DEF is a truck stop where they have it at the pump. It's a pain in the ass because its typically with all the big rigs and you'll have to pay in side to get them to turn on the DEF pump - but a fill up costs 5 bucks instead of 20. Also you dont waste any plastic.
@soderlund4165 жыл бұрын
Random question. Does VW use a different version of this than commercial trucks? Reason I ask is I know a lot of people don't know what DEF or AdBlue is. If it's all the same you can get it at the pump at most truck stops now. It's usually a lot cheaper around $2.75 a gallon.

We used to do this may years ago, but the DEF would still want to splatter out as we pushed down on the bottle. When that happened we pushed down with a shop rag spread over the top of the bottle's open end which seemed to reduce on mess. Now we just sell as many of those bottles as the vehicle requires. Despite diesels never being popular in California, they are now even less so, probably due to diesel gate. I've never understood the "fuel economy" rational for buying a diesel when the cost to repair these cars far outweighs any fuel savings that can ever be realized. Just my observations.
@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
Some of that is older TDI vs older gas. Today the delta in MPG, is much less. Plus you’re paying a premium for the car, the fuel, and maintenance.
@mrbagoly91 Жыл бұрын
It's actually a lot less expensive to maintain many of the diesel vehicles vs gasoline vehicles. In Europe this is shown to be true, maybe in America they don't know how to work on diesels or overcharge? I've got a 35d X5 and all the techs say it's one of the best engines BMW had, little to no maintenance.

@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
The short answer is, the fluid is used for emissions. It reduces NOX.
@Andrew-zv4fm5 жыл бұрын
So maybe you have the answer or know the answer to this question. Both Mercedes and VW/Audi had diesel engines in the states and all used the AdBlu liquid. However VW and Audi engineers were able to give the customer the AdBlu tank and a spare tire. Why couldn't Mercedes engineers figure out to do the same? If you had a diesel Mercedes, you did not get a spare tire in any form.
@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
Not including spare tires is becoming more common. They give you a pump and a bottle of stop leak.

@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
In the VW world, 15 years ago, the TDI was a great MPG car, and way better than the gassers. Plus diesel fuel was cheaper. Today you pay a premium for the car, the maintenance, and fuel. The MPG delta is much smaller. I don't think 4cyl TDI are stupid. I think they can be awesome cars with good power and great MPG. But the savings is not really there like it was 15 years ago. The newer gassers are doing great on MPG even on 87 octane fuel.
