Hello! I was thinking of using this pattern to make the jet pack for my Ulala (Space Channel 5) cosplay. I wanted to ask do you think it would work to cut the sides of the rectangle at an angle? I guess making it into a trapezoid? So that it would make a domed cylinder where the bottom is smaller in diameter than the top where the dome is? Or would it not fit together correctly?
@LostWax3 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about the cylinders on each side or the whole centre section? If I think it would work with the centre section, leaving the two side cylinders coming closer together at the top.

Yay! Missed your videos! So cool
@hannahlou51767 жыл бұрын
Could you make this with an opening in the top with a kind of "lid" and a fabric lining inside if you wanted this to work as an actual backpack?
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
You'd have to make it so the straps attach to the interior fabric inside lining, the foam wouldn't be strong enough to support the weight of anything too heavy.

Why can't I just trace piece 5 and then cut it to get piece 6? Haha xD Also I think you could save yourself some work by using 4 big mountain dew bottles or sth for the cylinders. Cut off the tops of the bottles, stack the ends into each other so that you get two cylinders, spray paint, voila, jet pack cylinders. But nonetheless I am amazed from your wonderful work.

Cool video! Shadow's bit off at 0:31, but I don't know how to get those top-down lighting shadows right, either. Love the jetpack - did you make it for something else, or just because?
@LostWax8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and it should actually change size as it falls on the part of the house that's farther away. Fun to play around with though. I had a few requests for a jetpack, and I was glad to make something that wasn't a hat:)

Chris help....! I’m working on this now. Just finished cutting out all the small pieces and I was watching the video to start cutting out the big pieces, for the jet pack body, when I noticed that you had all the piece #2 in 6mm foam in the video but on the pattern it says to cut it on 2mm foam.. please clarify... can I use the 2mm or must I recut 24 #2’s onto 6mm? Thanks so much!
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
Oh shoot, I am so sorry, it should be out of 6mm foam. My sincere apologies for that oversight.

Hi Chris! I purchased your jetpack pattern and started working on it this week. I'm really enjoying it and your pattern is great, but I've got a problem with the domecaps. When I try to glue them togheter (using hot glue), the fist bit goes well, but after that's dry and I try to glue the more curvy part, the first part splits again, even when I let it dry for several minutes. Do you have any suggestions how I can solve this? Would it help to use contact cement instead of hot glue? Or do I need to cut the pieces a little bit angled? I hope you can help me out! Greetings from the Netherlands!
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
I sometimes run into this when using thicker foam, because it wants to resist bending. three things you can try: 1- heat the foam up and shape it a bit by hand before you try to glue it (good to let it cool before you glue or you'll have to wait longer) 2-Make sure you hold the glued part together until the glue is totally cool, 3- use contact cement, or even super glue on the parts that are causing problems. Hope that helps a bit!
@lauraverschure78817 жыл бұрын
Wow, that was quick! Thank you so much for helping me, i'll try this out as soon as I can!
@richa70906 жыл бұрын
Just curious. You use 6mm foam. I have 5mm foam readily available. Would it make much difference in the end to use the 5 instead of the 6? Thanks.
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
You should be fine with the 5mm foam. As long as it is relatively dense- not too floppy:)
@richa70906 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'll check out its floppiness. 5mm yoga mats are pretty cheap at a local store. But the anti-fatigue roll mat is available for a little more (though, it's a little over 6mm, but it looks like what you're using in the video). Appreciate the response. :)

Did you switch to hot glue from contACt cement? I noticed you use both in your videos. I hate HG ...I always burn myslef and you have to work too fast with it. I I dont see where it would work good for this project...its globby and dries too quickly. I imagine youve switched because of the smell and flammability of CC?
@LostWax8 жыл бұрын
Yep, you are spot on as to why I switched. Because I am stuck indoors in the Canadian winter, I decided to switch to something a little more human friendly. When I started making foam stuff, people would ask if they could use hot glue and I said "Nope" until one time I actually tried it and I was surprised that it actually worked. Then I found a silicone baking sheet and that made all the difference in the world for getting smooth seams. Also if you can control the heat level of you glue gun, you can avoid most of those burns. So, yeah, contact cement is a bit stronger and you can work differently with it, but since both my son and father having cancer, I am trying to use materials that have less risk associated with them. Have fun making!
@kimberlydragone60158 жыл бұрын
Lost Wax thanks for your response. Love your projects. Best wishes to your family members on health issues.
@kimberlydragone60158 жыл бұрын
Btw how does the silicone sheet help making smooth seams?
@reaganpreshong74867 жыл бұрын
Kimberly Barcello the silicone mat gives you something to glue against, and if the glue comes through the seams it flattens the glue and makes it look neat
