I made this to control the temperature of a small area that I use for wine making. Splicing a thermostat into a short extension cord and plugging in a light bulb to produce heat, controlled by the thermostat.

Someone give this man the Nobel Peace Prize Award ! Job well done, if only you knew just how greatful I am that you took the time to educate us on this wonderful idea. I can't thank you enough, such a simple concept, that I would of spend months trying to solve. Thank you sir.

Thanks. I’ve made a couple of these for different reasons. Like keeping my water pump from freezing, I also bought reptile heating coils instead of using a light bulb.

Thanks for this informative video! 👍👍 I need to make one of those for my dog. I have a heat lamp out in his doghouse and instead of having it on 24/7 in the winter, I can have it turn off if it gets too warm.

I have the same issue. Old incontinent dog who loves life but I can’t keep in the house anymore. A 24/7 heat lamp gets very expensive

This is actually pretty simple. I have an application that I would like to use this on. An oil-filled electric heater. The built-in thermostats are highly irregular and do not sense room temperature. The problem is a device which could handle the wattage. The max would be about 1,800 watts. I would have to use a "line" thermostat that could handle 15 amps at 120 VAC. Other than that, I think this would work quite well.

I found some old resistance heat wire units that screw into light socket in place of light bulb that would work great for that and use more watts for heat and less wasted as light. Great setup there BTW. Very handy cord can be used for so many things.

A double pole can be shut off manually on the thermostat. A single pole can only be shut off completely by unplugging your cord.

Double pole means 2 switches. A single pole uses 1 switch to control 1 hot wire. A double pole uses 2 switches for controlling 2 hot wires. The video showed a single pole thermostat controlling a 120 volt load, which is okay. If it were controlling 240 volts, it needs a double pole to control both of the hot wires for the 240 volts.

Warren Hardy, my name is Jon, I really liked this video and is exactly what I was looking for to a project however I was wondering if you could make a video on how it’s done with a digital low voltage thermostat to? I want to do everything just like you did in this video but by using a low voltage digital thermostat. I am sure I would need to use a transformer or 2 different transformers. I was going to plug into the plug end part a 1500 watt electric ceramic space heater into the plug end of the thermostat controlled Extension cord.

You only need a single pole on 120 volt circuit and a double pole on 208 volt circuit.

It was not specified that this must be a line voltage thermostat. the thermostat and box were not grounded, therefore electrocution and fire could occur from any fault (crushed wire, failed thermostat, overheating) which if wired properly would have tripped the breaker. Also, some of the conductors were cut too short. And an incandescent bulb in an enclosed space causes house fires. This one will occur sooner, whens something falls over on the bulb.

How do i do this project just like you did in this video? there thermostat i have looks just like this one however has 4 wires total or less but it does not have 2 Black hot wires on the back either.

This Stelpro thermostat, the key to this project, is not available at any hardware store, farm & pet store, Walmart or Homedepot in the Sacramento area, but Stelpro provided the name of a source (Home Electrical) which has sent one after I paid them $25 for it, not $12 as mentioned in this video.

A hint to makers of videos: you don't need to show every little step in such a process, such as stripping the wires, searching for stuff, etc., etc., and you might want to provide a hint about where any special equipment might be obtained.

It could be quite easy for the novice to confuse 24v thermostats for the type used here. Using a 24v for this type service could result in a fire. I found the 120v thermostats at my local home center stocked away from 24v thermostats, to where they sell electric baseboard type heaters.
