How To Make A Titanium Windscreen

I recently received a gift from the GreyGorilla...a titanium wind screen that he made for my 12cm IMUSA pot (thanks Chris). He learned how to make it from Jason Byers and a video he did on his channel (check out Jason's channel - it is great!). Well, a few views of Jason's video and some materials from Dutch and I caught the wind screen making bug. Watch along and learn how to make yourself a titanium wind screen.

How thick is the foil? Is it 0.1mm? I'm thinking of making a Caldera Cone and trying to figure out how thick the titanium should be. This stuff looks like it might just support a 650ml pot.

Thanks for the video - one suggestion that came to mind -- Being a cheapskate, I'd suggest you cut to length (the short cut) before you cut your height (the long cut). That allows you to order enough foil sheet for more than one pot, or to have useful size scraps for making UL pot lids or whatever, without having all your screens the same height. If you have a use for the narrow strip you have, or can use it for another stand, then cutting the long cut first makes sense.

I'm curious about the thickness and strength of the titanium foil you cut. There must be differences between strong and weak titanium, so is there any problem using scissors to make a windscreen?

Hey Rob, I'm just getting into hammock camping. For the past 20 plus years, I've camped 1700's period; wool blankets, furs, oil cloth tarp, brass pot. Now I'm gearing up for this hammock thing. I made a hammock and I just won a hammock (Night Hawk by Dream Hammock). I got my ULA catalyst back pack. Made a stove and bought a little stove. Got a water filter. Now I need a tarp and some quilts. (UGQ) I'm hoping by the time I get back to Michigan in May, I'll have enough stuff to go on a hammock camp/hike. Today I tried making the pakit gormet scramble eggs to see how it tasted. So, I enjoy watching videos on how to make stuff. I've enjoyed your videos and Shug's. Keep up they good work. Maybe I'll run into you on the trail.

Out of curiosity, how do these hold up after lots of use? I'm wondering because I made some thing very similar out of beer cans that I saw ColoradoCamper has a video on and after some use it gets really fragile. I'm guessing the heat affects it and makes it brittle or something.

Nice! Question: Does the height of the stove make any difference when determining the height of the wind screen? I have several alcohol stoves of varying heights.

North Country Outdoor Guys For me it didn't. I made mine as tall as I could and still fit it into the pot. All of my stoves or pot stands allow me to go as built. If you run into a short stove that causes the handles to hit the top of the wind screen you could always notch the wind screen to allow the handle to pass by. just take a string wrap it around the pot. it is much simpler and more accurate then trying to find the diameter. 22/7 is a good number for pi.

Hey Rob, how high from the bottom of the screen are your holes? I did mine at an inch above the bottom and with a Fancee Feest stove it causes the flames to burn like crazy!

Mine are the same. If you are getting a really hot flame that is almost boiling the alcohol try adding a few more holes on one side to increase air flow. The side with more holes can face away from the wind. Let me know how it works.
