You made my day! We would find the metal straps in the 60's on the railroad tracks, bend them over and whistle our brains out. I don't think some people believed me! I'm going to be making some and relive my younger years! Thanks so much for the video!

Thank you! Had a couple of these when I was kid in the early 60's that were made by an elderly neighbor named Barney. Think my mom gleefully tossed them when I went off to college. I'd looked online several times for a how-to video and found yours. Now, I'm retired and will be making several for the neighbor kids and myself. RIP Barney, the kind of neighbor every kid deserves to have.

I use to make it from the bands off the ground by the railroad tracks also in the 80's in Lubbock, Tx,I can't find this kind no where.

This type of strap seemed to be used a lot on lumber on open freight cars. I made one as a kid and lost it. I described it to my dad, who was a machinist and one day he came home from work with one made of nice stainless steel, with all the sharp edges broken. It didn't have a hole, but it worked just fine. Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.

Im 62 now and this brought back the memories of doing the same thing. Picked up the banding off the railroad tracks in the mid 60’s and made them. They were fun and very loud.

As a kid, more than 50 years ago now, I recall making a similar style whistle using a thin round metal disc folded in half with a hole punched thru. The discs were used to hold tar paper (roofing felt is the correct name) in place until it was covered with shingles. I made one a couple of years ago but the metalic taste about made me gag. lol I guess I was tougher 50 years ago. hahaha Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this. I found one of these next to the railroad as a kid in NM. I thought the engineer or caboose operator had tossed them near the crossing in late ‘70’s early ‘80s. Very cool project to give to my grandson.

It's tricky getting it to work. It's similar to whistling through your teeth, which I could never do. Play around with your tongue position and take your time.

Back in the 60's we would walk along the tracks and look for "whistle wire" and get excited when we found some. They tossed it out of the boxcars coming or going from a brick kiln down the tracks a few miles. When we were little my bricklayer dad had us helping out by being his hod carriers on weekends. (we had no choice) One of our older hillbilly cousins showed up to help out. He was full grown so he just took over. We got stuck on clean up and he took a piece of brick banding and showed us how to make these whistles. It made him the coolest cousin ever. We made maybe hundreds of them. Gave to friends or sold them. I have one piece of this banding around that is unbent. I may just go and bend it and use it. What am I saving it for?
