Great video. Straight and to the point! I am adding the Scotch drill auger to my camping gear and a wood rocket stove will be great to make while camping/survival. Also makes a great slow burn fire for heat, etc. Many different applications can be used for this, with the wood R/S being just one of them. I’ve been primitive camping for 40 years and never thought about adding this vital to until now. Oh, well, as they say, better late than never!

Great video my son and I have made a few of these already, but the home made tool without using a cordless drill is gold. My son collects pine pitch from the trees where they are damaged and boils it in a can til its like a resin, then we pour it down the chimneys so they ignite easily when we are ready to use them. I keep one in my 4x4 for just in case moments and a few on our firewood pile for camping fun.

Made one of these today from a tree I fell last week, simply bad ass. Im not using it to cook today, just using it as a portable fire that I can move spot to spot until the walls get to thin. I had it sitting in a wooded area & I was in a seat chilling, then I moved it to my deck & used it there for a while & yes I was being careful. No point. You'd need a decent sized saw to cut a log like that. If you've got the saw, you might as well use IT. Instead of that first hole he drilled, cut a cross with the saw instead. Use your knife to chip a little wood out of the center and you get the same results for less effort and you don't need that drill at all

Excellent demonstration of a Rocket Stove. I think the hole size was just fine for the purpose. When that horizontal hole burns out larger, you can shove a small piece of stock in there, to reduce airflow, I reckon. Looks like it did the job! Thanks!

I just now revisited this video. I found a 1.5" scotch eye anger at an antique store. It's a good long bit. 45 bucks Canadian. I gave it a quick sharpen but will work on it a bit more. Old so now made in 🇨🇳. Now I remember you had a scotch eye adapter. I'll try to find one so I can buy a smaller anger set cheap and use an adapter for all of the others. I'll try this rocket stove log for the percolator to save on propane.

The point of a rocket stove is the direction and the velocity of the flame upward. There is a proportion that needs to be followed. You have to drill 3 holes roughly ⅓ of the circumference apart. This will provide the volume of air needed. Where you start your fire is the 2nd important part. The fire should be started down the center, in the core, near the bottom of the log. If done correctly, your log will burn evenly and efficiently. It's been done this way by the Europeans for hundreds of years. When you draw tips from other cultures and countries about surviving in the wild that are time-proven to work, you use them. Survival is a skill that is learned by actual experience. I'm 74 and still learning. I have used my skills from Denali down to the tip of Argentina, crossing the desert in the Northern Territory of Australia and some of the densest, harshest jungles in the world with only a large knife and hatchet.

If you put a small metal pipe into the air intake flow it might stop the hole from getting burned out wider? Just a thought ! and the inner fuel wood and top hole would burn as normal and maybe last longer overall? Also is you drill the hole at a slight downward angle you could feed small extra fuel that might increase heat, I guess this is an airflow trade off... I am going to experiment when I take my 7 year old grandaughter on survival lessons over the summer...not long now..Food, Water, Shelter and Fire... she already has these skills and now we need to practice more.
