Why no hob steady rest?

For these fine pitch gears the spindle is sufficiently sturdy/rigid

@@jerrykahler5586 Yes, that is done as SOP for all the jobs. It is a very robust spindle. Hobbing takes extremely small cutting pressures, espeically on the final cut. All of the chips are extremely small, each of the 11. 13. or more teeth of the hob (defined by the number of flutes/gashes) make a cut for each revolution. But I hear you, metal is rubber, and how much you can handle in the operation needs to be understood to achieve a reliable process.

The Mikron machines are extremely rigid by design; the larger 102 has an optional hob steady, their other machines don't have one because they don't need one.

There is more than meets the eye. A large wormdrive to give high quality tooth-tooth results, adjustment for lead angle, Double reduction gearbox for indexing the tooth count using gear ratios, full hydraulic control for smooth operation, high quality spindles and a filtered lubrication system. But regardless of the challenges I have certainly thought about it. Once you find an old machine and take it apart, the full appreciation of the complexities will sink in. Andrew
