I want to start using my old Zippo again and thought it would be fun to make a custom case for it in sterling silver.
This is not a full instructional guide but everything I did to make the lighter is in the video for people who may want to try this themselves.
It could also be helpful to people wanting to make a small hinged box in metal.
Have a go!

The hinge section looks more sturdy compare to the original Zippo brand. The quality of the hinge is better than zippo made.

Great video! As far as getting a piece like that hot enough to solder, it would be a huge help to put sodlering blocks behind and on the side of the direction the flame is pointing. I have even once gone so far to put an extra one balancing between the two of them (which make a corner around your block) This helps keep the heat close instead of having it disperse everywhere! I actually have one that is permenantly behind my soldering block because it makes things more efficient for gas and time, because everything gets hot quicker! Sometimes I even add just a little broken piece directly behind what I am going to solder. Works wonders.

Small thank you. Your video helps me a lot. I want to make 999 silver "Zippo". I was thinking about casting or making own silver sheets with rolling mill (bought recently, not much idea, how to use it). Also I realised, that hinge making is not easy. Your idea is good. Well, as a beginner, I am bad at everything - soldering, sawing, filing, never casted silver... Thank you for your video once more, I see, it is possible and the result is worth it.

Hi Chris, I have watched many of your videos and enjoy your knowledge and love of "old school"ways. I am an amature jeweller /silver smith and use solder paste a great deal. I had a wonderful moment of schadenfreuder watching this video and seeing your struggle with soldering. I would have used the little needle applicator that comes with the tube and run a fine bead of paste along the inside of the box placed a spare solder block behind the piece and then applied heat. The problem you had was due to low temperature. solder paste has its place and is ideal for this sort of job. Little tip though,a;ways put the orange tip back on the nozzle to stop the tube drying out. I often leave the syringe in a small jar with a few mils of water in the bottom to rehydrate it. Love the videos ,please keep them coming. Best regards.

Thank you. I have been using it lately to make a chain its been very helpful. I will try the water technique because it does dry out and clog up the needle thank you

Try to use a Tipp-Ex pen to mark out where you do not want the solder to reach. You still need to be careful though. Do not throw all the care out of the window..

I noticed people using a scorper to get the groove prior to bending, basically they use piece of tool steel sharpen it to 90 deg, and bend it so that it scratches the surface and leaves a 90 deg channel. might be a good idea for a future video.

A good one to try is putting water on a paintbrush and picking up some thick red rouge to cover the area you dont want sodler to flow! Also, tipex works but smells ultra toxic when its burning off so make sure you try that one with good ventilation

Beautifully finished , wonder why I didn't think of this idea...you should start to customized Zippo outer for people. About the old film cameras, I totally agree with you and I get so annoyed when people ask me to click a pic on their phones and then check it out and ask me click it again if the pic is not looking good . The suspense experienced before getting to see the exposed pics and the thrill we look forward to seeing the pics is what kids nowadays won't experience .

If it is that hard to bend you didn't score it deeply enough. I do this sort of thing and use solder paste. You didn't heat well enough. The paste should pretty-much boil away. PS: There is one big trick to making a fully-enclosed cube-ish box like that. Maybe I will email you about it. Really busy just now. Road trip coming up...
