While quilts are great, I struggle with the precision that is required to line up all those seams nicely. So when I heard of a technique that should make that a lot easier, I was excited to give it a try. For this technique you iron your fabric onto a big piece of fusible interfacing first. Then you fold over one line at a time and sew the seam. This way the whole seam gets made at once and everything will line up automatically. It’s basically quilting for dummies and I love it.
I gave the technique a try with this Link pixel quilt and am very happy with the results. Not all the corners are perfect, but they’re pretty close. And the result is definitely better than what I could have achieved with the normal quilting approach.
What you’ll need:
- Fusible interfacing that is big enough for your entire quilt plus seam allowance on all the squares
- Cotton fabric in all the required colors
- Cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter
- Special pen that disappears when wet
- Sheet of oven paper
- Tailors chalk
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Thread
If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it! Send me a picture on Instagram @craftswithellen.

Thank you! You just simplified things for me for my grandson's minecraft quilt. It'll be different than this one, but I love the way you simplified something that looked a little complicated. :)

Ah! Thanks for this video! Someone just asked me to make for them a pixel art megaman pillow. I didn't think to pick up interfacing while I was at the store today. If I like how this one turns out I will try your technique too!

Ellen!! That came out awesome and it was a lot larger than I imagined. Great work. Glad the water bath worked to remove the ink. That would have been a major freak out moment in our house. Picture us running around madly flailing our arms and not really fixing much of anything hahahah

+Slap Stuff Together Thanks so much! It was a major freak out moment for me too, after all that work.. Stepping away from it for a bit and calming down is very helpful for me in those situations. Once I could think clearly again the possible solutions were clear and thankfully my first option actually worked :D

Hey Ellen. I have probably watched this video 5 times because it makes me happy. Currently I’m half way with my pixel quilt and for some reason, I bought the wrong backing material. It’s all a mess and coming loose. I’m dealing with a nightmare. I just wanted to complain to you because maybe you felt this pain before. Hopefully I can send you a photo of the finished work. Also heard you’re in Germany with Laura? Hope all is good. Can’t wait for more projects

Oh no! I tore a couple holes in my backing and patched it up by ironing another piece of the backing on top. I hope you manage to make it work. And I'd love to see a picture of it finished!
