Thank you for the great idea of the autostabilizing quadcopter! I tried this method and it works great. Although it made the machine slower a little bit, but it moves very precisely.

I don't know if there's no wind on that level, or if they changed some things when it came out finalized, but it doesn't work anymore. I had built some kind of quadcopter, but it was difficult controlling it. I then made one just like this, watching the video and still, the problem persists. Once you start flying, it will begin rocking back and forth gaining speed and momentum until it crashes. There is no auto-stabilization.

Somebody posted this on the besiege sub, and as I explained there--and the poster confirmed independently, those vertical blades do not add "stability." Those blades just act like vertical aerodynamic surfaces facing in all lateral directions. When you tip one way, and the blades cause you to tip back, it's because tipping causes the craft to move toward the low side of the craft. That motion through the air causes wind resistance, and those vertical blades are the largest source of wind resistance on the craft, which causes the top of the craft (where the blades are located) to rotate away from the direction of travel. In general, the same craft flown inverted will actually tip TOWARD the direction of travel, because the resistance is on the bottom of the craft. This is not a good way to make a highly maneuverable, high speed craft. Especially because these unbalanced wind resistances will causes a stronger and stronger roll the faster the craft travels. Keeping flight characteristics stable at all speeds makes aircraft much easier to fly. You could--and the reddit poster did--achieve the same effect by placing wing panels on top of the craft. Turning your props just lowers your power and speed to boot.
@NUBSAUCETV
@NUBSAUCETV 6 жыл бұрын
LLohr, I don't see how my explanation is any different. I refer to an equal and opposite force of air resistance in the horizontal plane, I just don't go a step further to explain how it's above the center of gravity. Any resistance of rotation in the saggital or frontal/coronal plane is described as stability. So, yes, the blades add stability. Simple way to check, remove the blades, there goes the stability. As far as adding wing panels, that doesn't serve to be a good balance between speed, stability, and maneuverability because it severely impacts the speed of correction, the speed of the craft, and its maneuverability - the reddit user achieved a SIMILAR effect, but definitely not the same effect - I just tested it. But you're right, this isn't a design for making a "highly maneuverable, high speed craft" in the same way this isn't meant to transform into Bumblebee, or be a great race car - read the title. It's a tutorial on how to make an autostabilizing quadcopter. Thank you for further explaining the effect, but I'd encourage you to check your definitions before asserting someone is wrong.

Here I thought that making an autostabilizing quadcopter would involve using the game's sensors and logic to auto-adjust tilt. Turns out it's all just down to propeller orientation, apparently!

I tried following your directions, and I have a very easy to control quadcopter, but it's not doing any sort of auto-stabilizing. When I tilt, I just stay tilted at exactly the same angle until I tilt back. Watched the video a few times but still can't figure out where the auto-stabilizing is coming from?

I've noticed that you use 2 wheels on the bottom side of the ballast blocks which power the quadcopters four propellers. However, I was wondering, could you add more wheels there for addition lift? also, would this work on the steering? Placing 2 wheels on top of each other in the centre block so you can make it manouvre faster? P.S: awesome way of explaining it! makes it easy for everybody to understand!

@NUBSAUCETV
@NUBSAUCETV 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, we have rotational stability from centripetal, this keeps everything from wobbling to death. The normal blades issue a downward force to create life, and my thought is that the vertical blades create less lift and more drag in all directions. Image someone trying to take off with a jetpack, but they have 10 friends holding on to them in a circle with ropes. The person still goes up, but continues to level out because of the other forces on them. AKA - I DON'T KNOW.

I'm puzzled because you have the almost-upright rotor bladed sloping in the same direction as the shallow-tilted blades on the same rotor, on the modded model in this video, yet you have them sloping in opposite direction to the adjacent blades on the same rotor in the unmodded model in the video. Which is correct?
@TranceNotes
@TranceNotes 6 жыл бұрын
PS - sorry; I meant the reverse of what I said; it's the unmodded model that has the blades sloping in the same direction. The modded model has the near-upright blades sloping in the opposite direction to the two adjacent blades. Which of the two models is correct?
@TranceNotes
@TranceNotes 6 жыл бұрын
PPS - I gather it's the vanilla model that is correct, because I just built it and it works. I would really like to understand how the steeply-tilted blades provide the auto-stabilizing. Great video as always!

The near vertical blades have little to no influence on vertical activity - they merely keep the copter stable and by pushing out in all directions while letting the flat blades dangle the copter as if it was lifted with puppet strings

@NUBSAUCETV 7 жыл бұрын
Great Question! Remove the bottom wheel and add the launcher to the bottom (Download my quadcopter from the link as an example of how to use just one wheel - it needs extra weight, like a brace or two). Try to keep the center of gravity as close to centered as possible, otherwise you'll have to change the power of the front or back rotors to compensate. You can change the power of the rotors by speeding up the wheels, or by raising the ballast (strangely enough) from 0.2 to anything higher. Let me know if that helps!
