In this woodworking video, I show you how to make a jig and draws ellipses.
Unlike circles, ovals and ellipses can be a challenge to draw, are easy with an ellipse template jig like this one, for things like door and window openings, oval table tops or picture frames and you can even use the jig for making arcs and other woodworking design works.

I have just worked out that the length of the semi-major axis of the ellipse is the distance between the pen and the farthest bolt (on a slider). The length of the semi-minor axis is the distance between the pen and the nearest bolt. The total length of the ellipse is twice the semi-major axis; the total width is twice the semi-minor axis.

You could point out that the distances from the pencil to the pivot bolts are A) 1/2 the overall desired length of the ellipse and 1/2 the desired width the other.

It wasn't until I was making an exterior door from white oak and made a similar jig for the glass did I realize ovals aren't necessarily ellipses. [My glass happened to be a 'squashed ellipse'.]

Great little jig Colin! Question: Will that also work making circles? Or do you need to tweak it a bit? Thanks........... :)
@royreynolds108
@royreynolds108 6 жыл бұрын
A circle has only one radius. This is a maximum and minimum radius with variation in between. The bar could be used to make circles just pick the proper pin for the center and not use the slotted board.
@knecht105
@knecht105 6 жыл бұрын
Circles can actually make with common shop tools Steve. I have an example here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raK1h3mCatydnrs I can look at doing more circle examples in a future video.

BE CAREFUL with the wooden watch. The links are quite fragile. I have one and have caught the band and broken it twice. Don't wear it in the workshop. But they are beautiful. Nice Jig and video as always.

It would have been useful to have shown how the shape changes with a change in the location of the pins. The size has to do with the location of the marker on the arm.. It is all relative.

There is a much simpler way to do ovals/ ellipses. All you need is 2 nails and a piece of string

8:04 "You can use them for openings for windows" ... I note that hobbits all have round doors and windows. Would they, perhaps, like a variation of _elliptical_ doors and windows? Are hobbits keen to experiment a bit, or are they too conservative in their views and would they regard oval doors and windows as too avant-garde?
