Thanks! My eight year old niece got a kid’s sewing machine for Christmas and I’ve been looking for ideas to get her started. I needed something with just some straight lines, and that didn’t take too long to get her first 🎉🎉🎉COMPLETE🎉🎉 piece of work before we get into anything more in-depth. This the perfect project to build her confidence and skills. Just a heads up for anyone teaching an eight year old to sew, don’t spend lots on a machine unless you’re sure the confidence is there… I only spent about $40 for this machine, and it’s the most basic one I could find. It only goes forward (sigh), I can’t change presser feet, stitch width or even cut the thread with the little knife cutter thing… BUT it has a finger-guard, high/low speeds, and a regular but teensy foot pedal or press button start/stop. It seems like fear was her biggest roadblock. Once she saw I literally couldn’t get my finger under there no matter how hard I tried, she’s really started to fly!!

If you want the pattern on the back pieces to line up correctly, you'll have to play around and do some figuring. You won't be able to cut them out efficiently. There WILL be some fabric waste. That's just the nature of the beast. Thanks for watching!.

Thanks so much for this great video, especially for including the formula for cutting the back pieces. That was so helpful! I have a question about the seam allowance. I know you used a 1/2" seam allowance. However, I pieced & quilted my top piece using 1/4" seam allowance. I was always told to be consistent with the seam allowance in a project. But I can see the reasoning for the 1/2" seam allowance around the edges of the pillow as far as for durability in use. Do you think it will be okay for me to use the 1/2" SA?
@JannNewtonBeautyOver603 жыл бұрын
I would always use a 1/2" seam allowance.

I like the same fabrics on both sides of the pillow cover. But, if you want a different fabric on the back side, that’s ok. Personal preference. 😀 Thanks for watching!
@tlojewelrylove Жыл бұрын
Love that print. It's pretty!❤ I've never made one of these covers but I'm certainly inspired.😊 I must admit, for some crazy reason my usually good math brain got boggled when you were telling how to calculate the dimensions for the 2 back pieces. I don't know if a 3-inch overlap is standard to all larger pillow covers but, for me, it was easier to think of cutting the half sections with a 3-inch overlap of one another. So easier (for me) calculations to determine the dimensions for each of the 2 back pieces would be this: Pillow length ÷ 2 + overlap allowance = length of each back piece (in this instance... 18" length ÷ 2 = 9" + 3" overlap = 12" length for EACH of the 2 back pieces). Is a 3-inch overlap standard for larger pillow covers? In this instance 3" is ⅙ of the length so would you use that ⅙ formula to calculate the overlap in other pillow cover sizes? For simplicity sake, would a 6-inch cover have a 1-inch overlap? Or is it a personal preference or some other guideline to determine how much overlap you need? Sorry to bombard you with these questions that probably seems silly but I didn't understand how you were calculating the measurements which also made me wonder about different cover sizes. Thanks so much for your expert advice.❤ Have a blessed day!🙂
@JannNewtonBeautyOver60 Жыл бұрын
You could make a larger overlap for a larger pillow size. It really comes down to personal preference. However works best for you to figure the overlap is fine.

@JannNewtonBeautyOver60 Жыл бұрын
I explain in more detail in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2a1qKaXbq1gjtk. Bottom line - I like my pillow covers to be slightly snug on the pillow form. So, I don't add seam allowances when I figure my fabric cuts. Thanks for watching!

What is the seam allowance when you sewed around the pillow please?
@JannNewtonBeautyOver602 жыл бұрын
1/2" seam allowance. Thanks for watching!
@suzannewilliams85092 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the quick reply. I am still a bit confused about the pattern: If the pillow insert is 18” and you cut your fabric to 18” x 2..36” wouldn’t the pillow slip be smaller using a 1/2” seam than the pillow insert or is the pillow cover supposed to be a bit tighter than the insert? Thank you for any assistance
@JannNewtonBeautyOver602 жыл бұрын
Yes, correct, the pillow cover is a bit smaller than the form. I find that if I don't do this, that the pillow cover can be looser than I like. Thanks for watching!

So if my pillow is 16” should I add 4” or 6” for the back pieces?
@JannNewtonBeautyOver60 Жыл бұрын
You would follow my instructions. 16" would be the width (same size as your pillow form). To figure the length - 16" (size of your pillow) + 6" = 22" divided by 2 = 11". So you will cut 2 back pieces at 16" by 11".

@@annatrusty6137 I was wondering that too. I think if you're going to make an envelope pillow cover you are probably a beginner; well you might not be...but I am! So information like that is so important. I will only follow someone's tutorial if they have considered the nervous beginner ( unless it's haute couture etc. ) I really look for clarity in terms of seam allowances included....suitable weight of fabric...needle size...etc. Nothing against the uploader, who seems very nice, it's just that this type of thing is frustrating.
