Great to see you get back to this topic. I'm currently in the cry about coordinates part of development 😂 I'm a big fan of 2D isometric games. Perhaps I just played too much rollercoaster tycoon but the aesthetic draws me in.

Yeah, I like isometric games too but sometimes I just don't 😅 8 played too many farms and strategies which are mostly isometric

For me in my games the issue boils down to this, characters. If I go traditional route it's 10K frames of animations just for quite a simple game. If I go fully 3D isometric it's a technical and artistic block creating 3D characters fully rigged and animated. Everything else like maps, map objects are fairly trivial. Good summary of the situation. For me 3D+2D tends to be worse overall.

Hylics 2!!!! The creator, Mason Lindroth, got the look by scanning his handmade clay sculptures. Incredible artist.

Very informative, I think we’ll use that approach to make a game with JJ, thanks Tam

Hylics 2 looks so cool. Turns out what they're doing is 3D scanned physical models and stop motion animation, mixed with green screen and pixel art.

I agree, it looks phenomenal. That must have been a lot of work for the devs

(probably a game they made for this video/channel?) 3:13 Death's Door 3:33 ? 5:08 Some My Little Pony (mobile) game, obviously 5:40 A Short Hike 5:51 Hylics (2) 6:09 Gungeon

Wish list. Draw Calls and High FPS. Looking at Animal Crossing and how they set up the Environment with a Bend World Shader. Also the Player does not have allot of Characters on Screen, so they must be using a few large Atlases 2K, 4K to get the Draw Calls down with most of the NPC's and Props using the Same Atlas that would mean excellent performance (i.e. Hi FPS). So the question is. How do isometric games perform in terms of Framerate, and how do they setup the environment to guarantee high FPS on all platforms. Faced issues when targeting VR (Oculus), but maybe PC, and Mobile dont need to worry about FPS. Any ideas?
@TamaraMakesGames2 жыл бұрын
Animal Crossing is obviously in 3D but I don't know how they made that effect, I'm not familiar with shaders. I mentioned performance in the first version of this video. I think most devices handle both 2D and 3D pretty well these days however I didn't consider VR. And I don't think you can make an isometric game in VR. Though I must say I haven't worked with VR myself so I might be wrong. (If somebody knows an isometric game in VR, please let me know)
@davidblissett53152 жыл бұрын
@@TamaraMakesGames LOL!!! Isometric in VR :). I love your answer. You are correct. Its not so much that I'm thinking about Isometric. No. Maybe thinking to ditch the Oculus VR Game and go to a format that does not require 60FPS to publish. So that's why was thinking Isometric or at least a format is fun for the user, scales well, looks good, and does not require 60FPS to publish. Also, not thinking games, but "gamefying" other industries. Also, I've sent drones to take your "Hubby" out of the equation :). Honestly, not so good with 2D, but can do the 3D with ZBrush and then render out and bring things together in Unreal or After Effects. Still formulating a strategy, but this Girl has got My Eye. "Oouh-la-laa"
@TamaraMakesGames2 жыл бұрын
You know, it is very tactlessly to joke about drones right now. If you weren't aware, there are war drones that can drop bombs. And they can easily kill me and everyone else who I love. So I suggest you stop fooling around and throwing these inappropriate jokes 😕

Very helpful video, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge. I would ask you if the games Don't Starve Together and Carto was made on the 2D + 3D Approach? Thanks a lot!
@TamaraMakesGames2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm glad I could help you! I think that Don't starve together was made in 2D+3D but Carto is just 2D. But I may be wrong, developers use all kinds of tricks to make games
@vlakitus2 жыл бұрын
@@TamaraMakesGames Hi Tamara, thanks for your feedback. In Carto, the ground seems to be in 3D to me as the camera moves, It's possible to make a top-down only in 2D and get the ground feel like 3D?
@TamaraMakesGames2 жыл бұрын
I looked at it again and I think it is possible that developers used a 3D project but all objects are actually 2D. I think I'm seeing some perspective. I guess that's what you meant by "feels like 3D".
@vlakitus2 жыл бұрын
@@TamaraMakesGames oh that’s it, thank you so much for that! For that kind of project, 3D with 2d sprites, do you think it’s better to use colliders and rigidbodies 2D? To make sprites to be affected by the 3D lights will be difficult to achieve?
