The Roland controllers are perfect for this, but I wonder if they are able to stay in tempo with songs that drift a little or do you have to keep changing the bpm manually?

Beat grids are your friend.

As Terry says its all about putting that 'boring' time in to make sure your Beat Grids are on point all throughout the Tune. Then once your done for example just add 4x4 Kick in the Roland Sequencer and hit sync on the Sequencer and it will sync to the playing Track all day. As the Track speeds up and slows down by a few BPM because you Beat Grid now perfectly matches the BPM change you Kick on the Seqencer will match this change because its Synced to the Beat Grid. I have done this a few times with old Funk tracks and Reggae that are all over the place BPM wise.

i am pretty bad at getting beat grids right on rock tracks .The side chain tool sounds useful .I may give that a go on future mashups .Which im having a lot of fun with right now but i do have an issue sometimes with things getting drowned by bass.These are useful tutorials though

Serato studio seems pretty bad ass. The ease of use reminds me of reason or fruity loops in a sense. I may have to look into this. Thanks CT.

It's related more to Ableton than that terrible program Fruity Loops.

I highly recommend SS. It's fun and I've made numerous reworks and original tracks on it so far. It's definitely easier to use than Abelton.

Cool tutorial Terry, many thanks!!! I was wondering if to get everything lined up on grid that using Ableton and warping the track might be an alternative. Any opinions? I love ableton but serato is quick and intuitive, I’m torn between the best way to do these re-edits. Thanks in advance!

Ableton is wayyy more accurate and faster in terms of selecting notes, dragging notes, using your keyboard to move the notes and shifting the notes up and down an octave. I do like how serato studio has the global keynote finder. That's handy. That's its ace in the whole. But they need to fix that quantize feature, having to play your notes each time is a clunky workflow. you should be able to select you note and quantize them to the grid after you enter the notes so they snap to the grid. That's a necessity!!!!

Wish they fix the quantize so you can highlight the notes and snap them to the grid after you enter the notes rather than having to play them in each time. small qwerks like this make serato studio flow very slow. plus you cant drag notes and shift up an octave. very sloo0o0w flow.

I don't want to remix the songs but just make the low end hit harder. Those 70's tunes have some incredible baselines but don't hit hard or go low enough?
