Tomoko Fuse made some incredible sonobe variations but even more amazing origami boxes. This is one of my favorites.

Thank you for the clear precise tutorial - I found it hard but left it alone when frustrated and returned to it later, that worked for me, also holding the corners in place with paper clips helps while shaping.

so probably about two hrs tops to make the box and lid...great for my family as we try not to use wrapping paper for presents, usually fabric bags with tassles. Thanks, I am getting arthritic and this looks like I could have years of fun!

I FINISHED MY BOX! :D Lol, I colored the lid paper all diferent colors and its like a rainbow...:3 Also, when you think about it, if you look at the entore box, it remides me of the Super Mario Mushroom. XD

I need a bigger box. would it work if I multiply the measurements and still apply the same instructions on them? for example the 15by15 would be 75by75? (multiplying everything by 5?) Thank you!

It seems that you could attach something on the top of the box, like a flower, by inserting it into the slots.

the disadvantage about modular origami is that they are not very sturdy, they don't stay always nicely aligned and together, always require readjustments. I end up gluing the pieces together once I found the best alignment.
