Here is a tip for spreading cornstarch: fill a old sock with cornstarch and tap it on to the surface. It makes it a really thin layer!

I have an idea that you might want to try. Make up a special batch of clay with a little marbling in it. Then make the star and glaze it with a clear matte finish. I would also put two small holes in the back of the piece to run a thread through so you could hang it up as a wall decoration.

I think it would be really interesting as a trivet. Put four small legs on the backside of it. That way it can be art as well as functional.

Lovely! What a great idea.. I think I would've used the palest blue glaze, one which would break well and pool mostly in the shadows of the snowflake, to give more of an illusion of being snow-white..

We only glazed the parts that did not touch the kiln shelf...the nice thing about this glaze is you can dip it and it does not run at Cone 5.

I might try this with p-clay since it’s pretty sturdy as greenware. With paperclay you can also do some joining when it’s bone dry so less handling in the soft clay stage. It’s an enticing challenge since I love making these out of paper and stiffened fabric.

This is just amazing!! I can’t imagine how long this would take me! I did make a bunch of these out of fabric a few years ago and they took quite a while but were really fun to do. I fuss and fuss way too much! I love the result! Maybe add a few small gold overglaze decals to the snowflake?

Another glazing tip: Use small dowel, dip in hot wax, attach to back of ornament. Glaze/let dry. Then use heat gun to release dowel.

I love it. I'm going to try this. I love that you showed how to glaze it. I just did a double walled pot and I struggled with how to glaze the inter pot. I would make this from black clay and use honey flux that has a bluish glow when fired. I would glaze the whole thing probably pour the glaze then use the wire like you did to drain the excess glaze. Then fire on stilts with metal points over a cookie. Not sure if that would work but I could give it a try.

Awesome insight. I don't work much with clay but i can use this pattern with transparency sheets i use to make snowflake sanddollars and starflakes that i embellish with rhinestones and half pearls before laying epoxy on them. Ann do you think white stone ware would work? Or is the #365 porcelain the best choice? I am trying to use the stoneware but it seems to crack when bending. Maybe just not moist enough.

Stoneware might be a bit too groggy...its tricky regardless, you have to get the clay to just the right consistency - keep at it!

Your “short” inspired me to re-watch this video you & Jim made. I was further inspired to recreate my own version but on a little larger scale. I’ve made my template using a 9”x9” piece of paper and before I start rolling out slabs I thought I’d reach out to you first to see what you would have done different since you mentioned you had some thoughts about that. I’m about 2 years into my own pottery journey (mid life change of career path 😂) and am in college (jr year) working on my BFA in ceramics. My idea is to see how the first snowflake goes and to possibly make a few of these to use in my senior exhibition. (Spring 2024) So I’ve got time. My clay of choice is Laguna Bmix and I may go with the grog version for this project just for added strength. I greatly appreciate your thoughts if you have any to share. 💜💜

The porcelain should be plenty strong enough - the grog may not be as smooth. Also, if you use the white porcelain, the areas that you may choose not to glaze as less noticeable. Paper clay may be an area to research as well - its good for sculpture. Good luck in your journey. You should also join our Pottery Studio group on Facebook - great resource for potters. Thanks Chris! I work with porcelain because of the white finish it provides. I custom make mugs (check out my video on how I make them) for people and the white finish is a great canvas for underglaze painting.

The glaze is beautiful💓 I'm *very* new to pottery, so I'm wondering why you left the back unglazed on this piece? Could it not be fired with the same type of rig you used for dipping? Any explanations, reasons etc would be appreciated. A girl's gotta keep learning! 😊😊

Hi Julie! The challenge is the firing. If I had glazed both sides, the glaze would stick to the shelf in the kiln thus ruining the piece and a kiln shelf. There are stilts etc that can help with this but not always guaranteed success. I took the safe route. Best of luck to you in your pottery journey! Thanks for watching!

The plastic and corn starch aren't necessary and the explanations are a bit long. Some of the rough edges can be smoothed with a wet finger and when dry with a nylon dish washing thing but over all Nice idea. Thanks
