How to make an ukulele: The Ukulele Experience

This video is about how to make ukulele from scratch. We are proud to present Joe Souza from Kanilea Ukulele, sponsors of the Ukulele Experience museum and gallery, at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii. This video demonstrates their approach to making beautiful instruments from koa wood grown locally in island-based rainforests. Joe will take you through the stages of wood production - including selection of wood, sanding, milling and assembly. I remember when all the kids had an ukulele on Oahu, now days the name brand ones are too expensive and the kids wouldn't be caught dead seen playing one of those cheap Chinese ones. Back in the day there were thousands of Hawaiian ukulele artists all posting their bands info on everything, made their own posters. Now nothing.

The correct Hawaiian pronunciation is “oo-koo-lay-lay.” Mainlanders say “you-koo-lay-lee”.
